  • Kerry Weston,

have another wee snicker on me, why don't ya???

With a name like yours complacenta, it's a bit rich to call us smug.

  • complacenta,

i called myself so to reflect that very quality which, in my estimation, seems to haunt this commentariat's verymost actively squatting haunches..

oh, so we derive our best understanding of the terrors of Mana fron wiki or from google, do we?

  • Kerry Weston,

    Two H1N1 case's
    confirmed in Wellington.

Keep it there for at least another week! I've got one more exam to sit for this semester on the 18th, can't get sick till later.

  • Hilary Stace,

Been talking to some insiders in this H1N1 thing. Some good news and bad. The good is that it seems that many people over 60 seem to have a natural immunity, possibly from some global flu-thing in the 1940s. The other good thing is that it seems quite mild at this stage for most people, although could rebound more severely later, so it might be good to get it now. The bad thing is that they estimate at least 1 in 3 people will get it, and probably within the next month or so. So within the next couple of weeks will probably be no point in attempting any quarantine.

So if you don't want to get it, go into isolation from anyone else now, although that runs the risk getting the worse version later. On the other hand there might be a vaccine by then.

The main problem is that this is on top of the regular flues etc of winter which already stretch services and resources without having a pandemic to cope with. So probably best to do some planning now about what you and your family will do to lessen impact.

  • Hilary Stace,

Seems it's like a quick nasty flu - high temp, aches, pains, coughs. Worse than a cold but shorter and less intense than regular flu. Easy to test for and many are taking tamiflu as soon as symptoms start. But could become a chest infection for some people, which would need antibiotics. I guess we will soon recognise it.

  • Hilary Stace,

Perhaps Russell will give us an H1N1 info page. Probably only a matter of days until a PAS reader has some first hand experience to share. Fortunately, we can't catch it electronically.

  • Kerry Weston,

Thanks for the update, Hilary. Haven't had my usual going-into-winter flu & I figured the old bod was waiting for mid-semester to crash. I think I'd rather get swine flu sooner rather than later. It will zoom through universities, hospitals, railway stations etc.

  • ScottY,

    The H1N1 is closing in.

Bollocks. Kerre says it's hogwash. Don't go listening to those so-called experts.

  • giovanni tiso,

I believe ScottY might have been sarcastic. Or ironic: I forget which is which. Anyway, Kerre Woodham is exhibit A in my list of "talentless people who make a career in New Zealand just by sticking around long enough", so I follow her quite religiously.

  • ScottY,

Thank you Gio. I've said previously I don't normally do sarcasm on the Lord's Day, but Kerre's artlcle was quite a special event.

Still, who knows? Talentless people get lucky sometimes..
