I suggest we reopen Murder in the Cathedral now.
-
Actually, the NYT called it a slaying as well as a murder. Useless rag.
-
I don't think my location (ie. outside my own mother) or abilities make any difference to my uniqueness or my humanity.
See, I would have thought it manifestly obvious that your abilities, and the other differences between you and a bunch of cells, make a huge difference to your uniqueness, but oh well.
Re: your location outside your own mother, and the related issue of dependency on another human, have you considered this thought experiment?
-
hence the ‘you must think he’s dense’ angle
I don't get the name calling angle of your comments steve.
didn't we drop that stuff when we left high school. There is bitchy history re me and russell but aside from that I address the issues, refrain from name calling or verbal abuse and do try and stick to the topic. It's nice that you weigh in for russell, sad that you think you need to, and unfortunate that you feel I have no point. I'm not entirely sure what the point you're trying to make is either.
I've always argued in good faith. in a field of the written word definition I would have thought was all important to the message you wish to convey. if we can't understand the meaning of what each other is trying to say then we just get misunderstanding.
apparently the exact definition of some words is still up for debate and the use of some of these words is making people's message unclear. maybe that's the intended result. I hope not.

Keep at it. Only 87 pages to go.
-
would make the use of the word 'murder' perfectly acceptable usage.
now that's a rebuttal.
why didn't you say that 10 pages ago. -
Also: pray at home, people. Hovering outside the gate with beads is just a fake-assed way of intimidating women and their families and friends.
See, Tess please tell your friends, and could you try to understand the difference between the likes of me and Danielle and the likes of you and your friends and the fact that preaching is not appropriate. Pass it on. Danielle, girl, sometimes you really rock. :)

In that , you have an attitude. :)

Aww, Rob, hon, don’t be like that!
Regards name calling: Firstly, I think it’s pretty hypocritical to take the moral high ground, while otherwise being snarky and acting obnoxious. Your position seems to be: “It’s okay to act like an asshole, just don’t say the word ‘asshole’”. Secondly, if you mean the “dense” comment, I wasn’t calling anyone dense, I was saying you made it look like you think he’s dense if you feel the need to state the obvious.
To your straw men:
It's nice that you weigh in for russell, sad that you think you need to, and unfortunate that you feel I have no point. I'm not entirely sure what the point you're trying to make is either.
I didn’t way in for Russell, I disagreed with a contention you seemed to be making in one of your comments - one you now admit was worded poorly. I didn’t say you had no point, and in fact said one of your points was “fair enough” once you clarified it. My point was that you stated the obvious in order to make a cheap shot, or alternatively you worded your comment very poorly. But you know this as you already admitted to the latter: why be disingenuous? So much for always arguing in good faith.
I was just being fair and giving you credit for admitting to your botched wording of your earlier post. There’s no need to go all petulant.

And Robbery, you cant copyright.
-
Yet here comes Scott Roeder and his actions reflect on me because we held the same belief - George Tiller killed vulnerable human beings for a living.
I guess I just want to distance the actions of those who would do violence.
Fair enough, Tess. I disagree with you strongly on some issues, but I appreciate the way you express your feelings and ideas.

Steve, you seem to be newly discovering the joys that have blighted the copywrong thread for some time. There's a rather large gap between the frequently and agressively asserted self-belief and the actual behaviour.
-
Vexatious trolling, in other words.

...
Yes, I agree its not on. How would Tess like it if me and my mates hung around outside her church holding large photos of human genitals with gonorrhea and herpes.
To be fair, didn't Tess say she was not in favour of "hovering outside with beads", and did in fact pray at home?
-
Sacha,
Yeah, I know. Like with Grant, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, only to find he was in fact not arguing in good faith after all.
How can I ever trust again!! : (
...
Seriously though, it was all worth it just for that gotcha: Isn't it hilarious? He may as well have just said to me: "I don't call people names, you fuckwit!"
-
gotcha
you're the best arguer out there steve, you go for it mate, knock yourself out.
-
I mean I am pro-life, ... Basically I believe that no one should take another's life except in self-defence. I hate war, even wars that needed to be fought such as World War II, I'm against the use of many weapons, eg, nuclear, cluster bombs, mines, chemical weapons, depleted uranium etc.
Tess, I admire the sentiment, but on this you may stand alone among the self styled pro-life group.
As far as they're concerned right to life stops at the US border.

you're the best arguer out there steve,
I know. To be fair though, you helped a lot...

don't be such a cock,
Sory, can't help it, I'm built that way.

While I am here. Have a look at this I think it is something we could all contribute to.

Steve: not that thought experiement in particular, but I see a few issues with it.
1. the killing/letting die thing
2. the mother and father created the fetus by choosing a fetus creating action - sex (except in rape)
3. the relationship between mother and childAnyways, I'm not going to change my position on abortion, so how's about we just walk away from that debate, if that's ok.

I'm assuming this is due to the Catholic Church's position on not using condoms? I'll reply as though it is.
If someone was going to follow Church teaching on only having sex within marriage, then they aren't going to need to use condoms to protect against gonorrhea and herpes.
Why do we expect people to follow the Church on condoms use, when they ignore the Church on the actual having sex bit?
But aside from that, if the protesting with giant STI photos is legal, then I'd have to put up with it wouldn't I? There's certainly been protests outside churches before in America, so I suppose it isn't even a theoretical question.

Yeah... :(
A large amount of Catholics voted for Obama, and whilst I would never have voted for him because of his abortion policy (I wouldn't have voted GOP either because of economic and foriegn policy) I was really hoping he would do good in the Whitehouse.
But... the drone war in Pakistan is happening under Obama, and then there is the Detainee Photographic Records Protection Act. Signing to close Guantanamo was an excellent step, but it seems to be coming to nothing for some detainees. Obama's speech at the National Archives where he talked about "prolonged detention" for people "who cannot be prosecuted for past crimes, in some cases because evidence may be tainted, but who nonetheless pose a threat to the security of the United States." really bothered me.

Dangnabit! "weigh", not "way". Now that that's out of the way...

Tess:
I agree that neither you nor I (nor anyone else, likely) are going to change our views on the basis of this particular discussion. I really was just wondering if you had encountered that argument.
Anyway, Re your own points, since you made them:
1) isn't that directly addressed in the article?
2) so just apply it to rape then: do you concede abortion is legitimate in the case of rape? I am of the view that this thought experiment remains uncountered when it comes to abortion due to rape (but not necessarily otherwise).
3) Eh? -
