Thursday's Employment Relations Authority case on the matter of former Herald on Sunday assistant editor Stephen Cook's departure from the paper earlier this year.
Thanks, Russell! I'm going to watch for sure. I'll let you know if any stolen medals turn up!!
-
I'm thinking of taking some popcorn along on Thursday morning. Here are two more to add to the Stephen Cook tapestry:

Do! I don't think anyone even knows the Authority is open to the public. Journalists are never there (or anywhere else for that matter). It would be fun to have a circus. I'll bring Raisonettes.

This week's Media7 will be the first to go out on the Sky platform, as well as Freeview -- meaning our potential audience gets a lot larger.
You bet. Which SKY channel will Media7 screen on? And when?
Regards,
Unsophisticated TV Viewer with SKY but no Freeview -
The comment just below the heavying schoolkids reference looks like more of the same too.
-
Och! Certainly a case of me glad you're reading this stuff so I don't have to...
Congrats on the Shy broadcast. Unified Field Theory to follow...

TVNZ 7 will be on Channel 97 on Sky, up there with the news and documentary channels. Media7 will screen at 9.10pm on Thursday, and several times thereafter.

Cheers. A stablemate of Fox News then :)
I normally stop scrolling up when I get to Parliament TV; must try harder.

What does freeview provide that sky doesn't these days?
I remember there was a time when the one-off cost of freeview, plus the fact that it had some channels that sky didn't, made it more worth looking at. Is the second half of that gone now?

Speaking of broadband I've been trying to figure out where to jump next - the problem here in Dunedin is that we've been cabinetised ... all the dslams are in the neighbourhoods now (or at least are in mine) - that means that my ISP Orcon wont ever get around to installing their equipment in my local telephone exchange - no 25mbps for me
Locally at least it appears that Telecom has snookered all the other ISPs - sure they've split into bits but given the commerce commission's recent ruling no one can compete with them now that they've forced us into cabinets.
Orcon's been quite rightly crying 'foul' - but, they've also shown little enthusiasm to move faster broadband out of their cherry-picked markets in central Auckland and Wellington - unless something changes soon I may be faced with holding my nose and, despite my past bad experiences, moving to Telecom
I tried to get any sort of indication out of Orcon on the phone and by email this week - didn't really get an answer that helped much - I want some competition here - I throw $1500 a year in this direction who wants to make the best offer?
-
Kyle, it's worse than that. It seems TVNZ caved and allowed Sky to have the Freeview channels without insisting on quid pro qui for Prime, which is still not available on Freeview. Missed opportunity there - although nice for Russ with the bigger potential audience and all.

I agree about the Sunday News, and it does seem to be Jonathan Marshall who is leading it in this direction. He's a very good tabloid reporter - I often find I'm half-appalled, half-admiring of what he does.
I wonder if he'll be able to turn into a really good non-tabloid reporter? He certainly has the drive.

Staying with the Sundays, David Farrar notes Thursday's Employment Relations Authority case on the matter of former Herald on Sunday assistant editor Stephen Cook's departure from the paper earlier this year.
Don't envy the poor bastard who has to choose between the lesser of two weevils there... (Yes, Patrick O'Brian will get his royalty cheque when we meet in the afterlife.) A slight dissent from Ralston's comment: I don't see why they parted company, they were such a perfect fit -- rat in sewer.
Davis is the uncle of Maori Party MP Hone Harawira, who told Marshall " "I will not tell my uncle not to do this. If he feels passionate about it then I say, more power to him." As is usually the way with these things, Tariana Turia was obliged to issue a statement making it clear that her party doesn't support the targeting of individual public servants
Would I also be totally out of order in surmising that anyone deciding to "target" Maori Party MPs in a similar manner would have to get past a DPS detail first?

Small voice from Wellington cableland here... is TVNZ 7 going to be on TelstraClear's cable teev?
-
What does freeview provide that sky doesn't these days?
The absence of a monthly bill?
-
Heh, just what I was about to say, Graeme. Even if you compare it with only the most basic Sky package, you'd be saving 500 bucks a year. And also a digital terrestrial platform. Which doesn't suffer from rain fade like a satellite-based system.
Also, Jeremy, who on earth will sign up for Sky just to get prime in digital? Its more of a benefit for TVNZ to be on the Sky platform than it is for Sky to be on Freeview - I'd imagine the vastly increased audience for TVNZ 6 and 7 would allow higher priced advertising rates to be levied (is there advertising on 6 and 7? I don't know as I have neither sky nor freeview)?
-
What does freeview provide that sky doesn't these days?
A sense of intellectuallity.

I think that by the time the year's out, Prime will be on Freeview. Jonathan Coleman is leaning on Sky, I gather.

I'd be surprised, none of the new channel that have come on stream in the last eighteen months or so (documentary, comedy, etc.) were put on the cable system, I think it's to encourage the shift to digital. TVNZ 7 migth just about do it for us.

What exactly does Sky provide to people who really aren't that into sport, and find the movie channels aren't that big a selling point since the release window between cinemas and DVD collapsed? How many news channels screening wall to wall Michael Jackson necrophilly do you really need?
-
I'm with Craig, if it wasn't for the sports on tap we would have ditched Sky for Freeview long ago.

I was at my parents (who have Sky), and saw an absolutely fascinating documentary on the Arts channel about the New York Philharmonic's recent(ish) trip to Pyongyang. Best TV docco I've seen in a while.
So, that, at least.

None of the frequent signal loss "due to atrmospheric conditions"? A savings of $100+ monthly?

Sure, but even then a couple of mildly intriguing docos a month does not a convincing cost-benefit analysis make. My entirely unscientific survey would suggest that Gio isn't only person for whom 'sport on tap' is Sky's major, if not only, attraction.
Anyway, am I the only person who finds themselves watch a lot less TV full stop -- and thanks to a PVR being a lot more selective about what I do watch and saving it up for a wet weekend.

In my house the most watched TV channel is Playhouse Disney. The kids love it.
