  • Paul Capewell,

Darn - I tried signing up a new account using PayPal as my currency, but it decided that the PayPal account country doesn't match the store.

Also, it all looks a bit empty. The Local Sounds selection is amusing!

Will keep an eye on this.

  • John Holley,

Here is the NZX announcement :

Renaissance would like to advise that following Apple's launch this morning of the Apple Online Store and iTunes Online Store, Renaissance will no longer be responsible for maintaining the web site and online store on Apple's behalf.

As a result of this change, New Zealand will now come under Apple's worldwide pricing model.

Renaissance expects this to help increase overall demand for Apple products across all channels in the country.

While this change means Apple will have a direct online presence in New Zealand, Renaissance will continue to manage the distribution of Apple products in New Zealand. There are no changes in the contractual agreement between Apple and Renaissance.

  • Paul Capewell,

Mm, yeah. Also, the new account sign-up was temporarily going through the US default, but it now offers a New Zealand iTunes Store account. Payment via Mastercard and Visa based in NZ, which locks me out somewhat.

    Screenies:

    front page
    empty-looking showcase

    Hope that helps.

  • Jeremy Matthews,

Try going to the various stores in the hope that one of them will end up giving up the NZ option. I just went to the Nederlands one and got the New Zealand option in the drop down. From the US I wasn't getting it.

    Caching, or not quite rightness.

Haha, now I've lost it again and can't find it. Its not even on the screen you just posted above! Someone post a link to something in the store (link starts with phobos).

  • Tomorrowpeople,

Yep - looks liek a few bugs to be ironed out.

I hope Apple have got some serious server grunt and back-ups going on - this thing is going to get some serious traffic....

So, where can I buy shares in the ITMS?

    lol

  • Tomorrowpeople,

I gotta say the 'local sounds' splash screen is naff.

It looks like a recruitment ad for the Young Nats circa 1990.

So where is all the local content - 12 albums?

Step up to the plate local record companies.

How ironic that one of the first local albums for downloads is by those anti-commerical guys the Mint Chicks.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

There's still no sign of New Zealand on the drop-down list between Nederlands and Norway, but I've created an account anyway.

Things are looking rather bare, but already I'm eyeing up Sugababes. Now I just have to decide which tunes will be my first purchase.

Yeah but without the eyecandy of the album cover they do tend to loose their omph - so to speak.

  • Compie,

    Holly Crap,

I take it the artists have no say in the music reviews on iTunes.

this for The Who's Last an average but ok live album from their 1982 farewell tour.

Who's last is a tepid and utterly forgettable album

Wow!!! May I add as a mad Who fan, it's not thie rbest work, but this sort of review should be reserved for NZ Idol winners not the who.

  • Tomorrowpeople,

    The reviews are 'user reviews'.

You can add to them yourself!

  • Matt Jeffs,

I see a few other overseas based kiwi's are having the same problem as myself. Great I thought. A way of legally purchasing great NZ music. But alas some boffin has decided that only users with New Zealand Credit Cards can purchase from the site. Is there anyway around this that people know of that isn't obvious to me yet???
I thought the biggest plus of the legal mp3 / download revolution was to give bands and music from other parts of the world, such as New Zealand, an oppourtunity to make themselves a bit more global....

Time for my stupid question of the day:
Does anyone know why this overseas based purchasing block is in place?

Whoever decided on this 'NZ credit card only' policy has scored an own goal on behalf of NZ music industry.

  • Paul Capewell,

Matt - The regional stores have always limited customers to those who have a card in that territory. Its not just a NZ thing.

I would imagine it is to do with rights and stuff (but I don't see how it doesn't affect imports and such on physical music).

And yes, it sucks the big one. I can only hope it'll change one day but till then I'll stick to newzealandcds.com and (grudgingly) SmokeCDs.com.

As I understand it, the labels are able to negotiate for their recordings to be sold in other territories, but it doesn't happen automatically. I know Loop Recordings has a lot of its catalogue available in Europe for instance.

And don't forget Amplifier for non DRM-ed legal NZ music via MP3 download (and physical CD sales).
