  • Simon Grigg,

But less so, perhaps, in the US, where the big global mobile brands aren't so utterly dominant, and where there's room for Sidekicks and Blackberrys.

Isn't the US cellphone (rather than the smartphone) market pretty much dominated by what deals the big four providers have done to give away or substantially discount phones for their customers? Smartphones on the other hand tend to be purchased

  • Compie,

    Cool video,

but there's something really unnerving/galling/whatever to see a guy 10 years young that yourself swilling beer in front of a computer with a hoodie worth $60m+ USD.

All the while my student debt is peaking and I'm coverting an apple cell phone in the new year.

Still cool vid, his mate's a bit of a tool. "I don't want iTunes on the cell phone" yeah whatever.

I do like the pain in his voice. There's a fine line and even Jobs' closest friends can be cut off if they reveal anything about new apple products, and he doesn't want to give too much away.

Rose and Jay Adelson were both at Foo Camp this year, and they did just strike me as sort of regular guys, quite friendly, with Adelson having a bit more cool about him.

The amazing thing about Jay Adelson is that for a while he was was worth hundreds of millions in stock in the company he founded, Equinix. But he held on to his stock through the tech crash and wound up with very little - as he put it, enough for his kids' college fund. He was going to work in a cafe when Rose tapped him for Digg.

  • Tomorrowpeople,

    Back to iTunes NZ.

What do you think will be the most popular local download (NZ Track).

Fat Freddie's insert track name here sure, wahtever, blah blah blah but I'm thinking maybe something like 'Poi E'?

Well I do, one less thing for me to charge or take out of my car so it doesn't get stolen sounds good to me.

but there is nothing new in a phone that plays music..the S/E W950i holds 3000 odd songs with a six hour battery..more time than my iPod..has a touch screen etc...its already there. All we are talking about is the brand

  • Tomorrowpeople,

As I said earlier in this post (which was edited for 'sensitive' reasons) I already own what is brande in the US as an iTunes phone.

I can load tracks onto the memory card and play them like an iPod.

What I'm saying is I don't NEED my phone to be an audio player.
    Doesn't mean I don't like the idea.

Russell B: Q: Who's the fourth-biggest music retailer in the country, and climbing?
    A: Vodafone.

Russell, what numbers are these from? Is it based on $ sales? What are the top three? Just curious...

It came from a little birdie, and I'm actually wondering myself now. It might be more correct to say that Vodafone has become a significant player in music retail. And Telecom hasn't.

  • Tomorrowpeople,

Compaines are always quick to 'leak' info about their sales figures shooting up after launching a service.

Kind of like the continious 'we're number one' headlines that the Sunday Herald and Sunday Star Times put in their papers.
    Every week.

Still, a 200% increase in sales seems a big jump.

This week 200 songs D/L instead of....

  • Jeremy Matthews,

Yay it's happening. I just saw New Zealand as an option in iTunes but it's not quite working yet. $17.99 an album and $1.79 a track are listed on the iTunes info site.

http://www.apple.com/nz is loading up our Official Apple Online Store. Prices are a little cheaper.

  • John Holley,

And the RSS feed from Apple has this (as of 6:50am)

Apple Launches iTunes & Online Apple Stores in New Zealand
    Today, 06:50 AM
Apple today launched the iTunes Store in New Zealand, giving New Zealanders access to outstanding local music and the same innovative features, breakthrough pricing and seamless integration with iPod that have made iTunes the most popular music jukebox and online music store in the world. Apple today also opened the online Apple Store New Zealand, where customers can quickly and conveniently purchase Apple’s complete lineup of innovative products. Read more…

  • John Holley,

The other thing of course is that www.apple.co.nz now redirects you to www.apple.com/nz. I feel a bit sad about this being the person who set up the apple.co.nz domain years ago :(

But the good news is there is a chance to win a MacBook or one of 5 iPod Nanos each day!

    We now can also have:

    1) Build to order Macs
    2) Free iPod personalisation
    3) Free shipping
    4) Online discounts for students and teachers
    5) Mac and iPod experts via 0800 for support (interesting to see how that works)

In way of price comparison, the new 17" MacBook Pro is roughly $350 more expensive in NZ than the US store. This is around 7% more expensive. (Which, as I have said elsewhere ties into our market size and currency hedging)

  • Paul Capewell,

This is great news. Now all I need is a NZ credit card to buy hot new tracks that won't be ported to the UK store. Haha.

Looks like some glitches with iTunes side of things. I was going to grab a screen shot of the New Zealand option as well. Oh well.

  • Paul Capewell,

Yeah its not appeared in the list of stores to choose from yet. Will at least be able to browse it and see what I'm missing. Haha.

Does anyone know if you get someone a gift certificate for a certain store, whether a foreigner can use it in that store? The territorial restrictions are kind of annoying.

But hey, New Zealand has a iTunes now!

  • Gary Hutchings,

Gonna be a large number of apple retailers busy repricing things this morning to compete with these new price points.
I guess it is all coming out of renaissance's previous margin.

I'm not quite sure how this works either. I agree with the territorial stuff being annoying though, as someone else said:

"I can go and buy a US/UK release with my NZ credit card from Amazon and have it shipped to my door. How is it any different with iTunes?"
