  • Sam F,

Its quite ironic Andy Shaw's father was a rude scathing TV reviewer years ago.

    I lol'd.

  • Sam F,

Last one I'll quote, and I can't resist quoting it in full for its glorious dementedness.

What TVNZ programmes? We are severely punished with the ongoing repeats of Friends, Australian Soapies, and American Comedies. If you ask me what NZ culture is, I can tell you it?s all about drugs, violence, and crime. And that is what TVNZ is all about. The other foreign TVs promote foreign extreme behaviour that is copied by so-called future generations even among those in so-called higher education.

My suggestion is to promote national culture and unity, and less Police vs criminal shows. It is defining NZ psyche in everything we do, that people are categorised to the 'them and us' mentality.

Once you get that solidarity thing achieved, people shall be happy again to start spending, working, and saving. And it is timely for the 2011 World Cup. The All Blacks has to be a national team, not them and us team.

  • Kyle Matthews,

All roads lead to the All Blacks and winning the World Cup. There is no other culture in NZ.

  • andrew llewellyn,

Some of you probably know Andrew Shaw, I don't, but I've long held the opinion that as a TV programmer, he is/was about as divorced & distant from his audience as it was possible to get.

Also, I read a piece on him by Steve Braunias in which Shaw seemed to be described as about the wittiest person Braunias has ever known, on the strength of him telling someone publicly to "go fuck himself" or words to that effect.

  • andrew llewellyn,

Heh. I'm being a bit hard on both of them - here's Braunias' piece on Shaw.

  • Sam F,

Oh, for those heady days when Prime posed "a serious threat" to TVNZ and CanWest...

  • andrew llewellyn,

How are the numbers now? Prime seem to have most of the (admittedly very few) shows I actually watch.

  • andrew llewellyn,

Here's a nice demonstration of reading comprehension from someone over at Your Views

Mr Shaw is absolutely correct with his critique about Go Girls. What an absolute waste of money, time and energy to make such an imature, pathetic programme!

Outrageous Fortune is by far the best locally made programme and none has come close to emulate it.

Top TVNZ exec should have the right to criticise what is shown on his channels without sensure. Mr Shaw is also right to say "it is only good for s*** paper!

Would it help to know that they're husband and wife?

Actually yes, it makes a huge difference.

  • JackElder,

TBH we use Friends Overseas for pretty much every show we bother to watch. Or wait four years and then get them all on DVD at once (currently working through season 3 of BSG).

  • Sam F,

Don't I know it... I'd love to get started on it from the beginning. Looking out for el cheapo DVD copies of S1 at the moment (would rather not pay OTT boxset prices if I'm not sure if I'll like it).

There's the miniseries first, then season 1... somewhere (whitcouls perhaps) had all the earlier ones on special when the latest season was released on DVD.

Wait? Where? Sky or on poor people's tv?

I got Season 1 of BSG for... $30 I think, at the Warehouse.

Haven't started watching it yet, forgot there was a miniseries first. (dammit)

You're in for a treat when you get to season 4. Everything post the mid-season break has been... intense.

Can't quite believe there's so little of it left to go, and I don't have any idea what's going to happen.

Make sure you watch Razor as well, not sure if that'll be on DVD.

Kyle we have everything through the TV and I never ask if it's Sky or Freeview or poor people's, but it's on the blue screen menu on the red function key, and I generally think of the sky when I look there ;)

You mock me and my pain!

Though I think I accidentally kinda promised my son that we might get sky again for the Winter Olympics next year. He seems to have taken the idea to heart.

Yes,but bear in mind, I always think "what would Kyle say"?I have a Kyle outside who continuously lives in a state of dying, depending on which plant I will stab him from, and a Cartman inside hanging around a food drawer. He's stuffed of course :)

The 'Razor' episodes are included as part of the box set of season 4 pt 1. You can buy them separately, and there are (I think) slight differences in the material (a few extra scenes, I think). Probably not worth it, though.
