In Rodney-land, children will get exactly the same amount of say as other voters.

Meanwhile, There is no recession in Auckland:
Auckland City ratepayers will be asked to pay more than $100 million to turn Queens Wharf into "party central" for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Prime Minister John Key yesterday said the Government would help with the purchase of the wharf, leaving the council to develop a cruise ship terminal and public spaces on the 474m-long structure at the bottom of Queen St.
Perhaps we really need a "broad philosophical shift" away from the notion that the words Rugby World Cup are supposed to make us all hand over our wallets and STFU.
Meanwhile, I think its time to hand the Prime Minister an 'epic fail' grade on Fiscal Conservatism 101.

Oh that's too hilarious - Banks spouting the Act talking point du jour:
"I need to put the proposition in front of the public and I need to get a buy-in and everyone needs to know where the costs are falling and how they are going to be funded"
...but only about things that matter, right?

That's bizarre. And people think our stadium is the council wasting money.

Also strange since they’re putting it miles away from where the games were being played when they had the chance to put everything on the waterfront.
Anyway, it’s Auckland’s cup; they can do what they like with it.

And note the contrast between Rodney's examples of 'bad' spending and this one of 'good' spending. Oh, hang on, red on red doesn't stand out much.

Opening up Queens Wharf is an essential and fantastic project, but yeah I agree it's pretty strange for the government to be pushing Auckland City Council hard to spend a huge amount of money on this - while at the same time cabinet approving Rodney Hide's "slash and burn" local government ideas. Sounds rather similar to how they're such big fans of referendums - except for the Super-City.
Fiscal conservatism and consultation are clearly great - except when they get in the way of the agenda you're trying to push though. Hypocrisy much?

He's 'avin' a laugh? More like 3.6% can do what he likes with it.Just our rates.

Rudman on t'wharf:
How different from the brave words just two months ago in Making Auckland Greater, the Government's response to the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance report.
...
Yet yesterday's announcement is a return to the bad old days. The only focus is to rush through a visitor terminal to have a home base to the temporary hotel ships arriving for a few rugby games. It's a long way from the spirit of the 2006 Auckland Plus report, signed up to by Government and local agencies alike, which calls for a "signature attraction" on Queens Wharf, as part of creating a world-class city and tourist destination.
A simple bog-ordinary visitors terminal is not a signature attraction.
