Here was me thinking that as a provider of Radio about NZ, radio NZ already had an excellent internet service. Concerned about any changes. After Guyon to Morning Report I'd need to feel that the service was going to remain clearly and significantly a public service and not feel the need to ape commercial stations.

Count me as a mal-content. Seems the world has gone to hell in a handbasket when National Radio is being rebored.

By chasing another 500,000 listeners (content consumers?) Radio NZ may be entering its own little ratings race. Meeting that target they might be tempted to shorten all reports, keep it snappy, run competitions and stick to more positive themes. Hard to believe but look at the rest of NZ media.

TVNZ problems started when it went into competition with TV3 and the marketing department now makes all programme decisions. Radio NZ are not at that point yet.

Plus extra 'content' perhaps, as before...Do 'you' still own your own history
(medias 7 thru 3), can you use old material
or revisit and build on earlier stories?Maybe you could you start by defining 'News'
as it has become elastic at times
and constricting at others
- where the medium stops
and the message starts...even a show with some of the old media pundits

I'm struggling with 'integration' these days - in the product-placement sense of the word. 360 degree brand integration with content. Sad.

When we first started Media7, we had then-Education correspondent Gael Woods on to talk about reporting of the Avondale school stabbing incident, and I was so impressed with the way she knew the story every whichway, including things I hadn't thought of.
I had many dealings with Gael when I worked in the NZ education sector, she was a fantastic journalist. Her replacement, John Gerritson (sp), was equally well informed and professional. I still listen to various RNZ shows online/podcast and enjoy them, but then I am a white middle class bloke so hardly well placed to comment on diversity.

The BBC gets sufficient funding to chase the entire audience range and so attempts to do so (whether it does so successfully, or should attempt this is another question). RNZ does not. If it won't be funded properly, then it should specialise, focusing on what makes it different from the commercial broadcasters (which seems to be less inane chatter-banter).
Whilst I want RNZ to be across the whole country too, I am slightly worried that without more funding, any efforts to do so simply means running down the central bureau in Wellington, which could undermine the current quality.

You're not altogether wrong, although they do have a major Auckland component and other smaller branches around the place. Sacha was just indulging his snark, which appears to have put on weight.

TVNZ has been "dismantled", so to say, as a "public broadcaster", and was forced to follow the "market direction" determined by the private competitors.
I fear that Radio New Zealand may be turned into a similar kind of broadcaster, having little resemblance to true public broadcasting. Of course they need to move more into the digital age, but do not fix what may not need fixing, I'd say.
Radio NZ is the last rather good quality and independent, balanced media source we have, in public hands, and all these moves must be viewed with great suspicion.
News and independent, balanced, fact based reporting is becoming rare, do not abolish this at Radio New Zealand, please, we are already being "dumbed down" too much elsewhere.
