  • Grant Shimmin,

Bigly. Surely has to be a word popularised by Donald Trump

  • James Littlewood*, in reply to Emma Hart,

I know I'm jumping the gun, but I'm with

    shit-weasel

I have nothing to add to that. Definitely. Weasels are an imported pest, devouring our natural resources and - by extension - our cultural and economic points of difference. And you couldn't really get more 2016 than that.

And, while shit-weasel is a gender neutral term, it is far from species neutral. We can join in the whole my-species-is-better-than-your-species rhetoric that has dominated global politics this year, yet from a position of infallible moral safety.

Fuck off, shit-weasels! Damn, that felt good. Thanks Emma.

  • Ian Dalziel, in reply to JessicaRose,

I’m making a pattern with my suggestions

We are all of us on a quest for the golden meme
so that the whole is to the greater part
as that part is to the smaller part
    looking for a certain ratio...
a proportion that is considered to be
    particularly pleasing to the eye/ear.

    but I digress...

  • Daniel Wilton,

The rise of the Alt-Right has to be considered, as it only really became mainstream this year.

Brexit and Trumpageddon are both worthy

Also is it word of the year or the best words if so we need to consult the Donald Bigly quick as apparently he has all of them

  • linger,

tbh not sure I have any words for this absolute fluster-cuck of a year.

Kaikoura's been clusterfucked (and will be again by central government, if the Chch experience is anything to go by).

Though the Brexit campaign, the rise of Trump, the fall of the "expert", and the spread of “fake news” appear to be covered by blusterfuck

Clusterfucked seems to be the natural successor to 2011's munted; the only problem then is, where do we go if 2017 is worse?

    Elite

Nominated because of the change in meaning. Previously, "a small, select group" (as in 'elite athletes at the Olympics').

Now it means anyone who has read a book, or likes to get their news from journalists who read them.
