Seems to be the emerging expert-quote pattern, gilding the lily of the bleeding obvious with a touch of loopy conjecture.At least they didn't ask Prof. Newbold, who seems to have developed the almost psychic ability to draw a gobsmackingly insensitive conclusion about someone he probably never met. Perhaps some kind of annual dunce's cap award is needed to discourage this rubbish.

Cruise-ship tourists from Australia, who (Bob) Parker met in the central city on Monday, were not concerned about the shakes.
"There is a burgeoning new form of tourism here which is, 'Come to Christchurch, experience an aftershock and have a look at the city'," he said.
One of the most offensive comments I have seen re the earthquakes.

Is he actually trying to promote disaster pørn tourism, or is he just trying to describe some trend that actually exists to some significant degree?

Good grief. Even if it's true that earthquake tourism exists, saying that for publication, where you know your exhausted and anxious citizens will see it -- and using the word "burgeoning"?

The offensive bit is that Parker's insistence that the show must go on, even when the stage is shattered. Never mind the people who are living through it; as we are now. Again.

I would be happy to come to any sinkhole site and record it . As it is, i am off now to Richmond to find the one near New World.
PS: I have driven past the City Art Gallery this afternoon and a security guard is still there while all the grounds around him are cordoned off.
You would think Bob and his hard working team would get on to it . Tourist walk aimlessly about like drunken sailors with money to spend and nowhere to spend it. -

Emergency hq? Not sure where it is but there is just nobody anywhere. The building is sans people.
The guard sits well away from the building.That does make you think what would happen if a big one would surprise us. -

The Gallery reopening situation doesn't seem to have progressed beyond this state of affairs, and no-one seems very forthcoming about the reasons why.

I loved this bit of forward planning
(or unplanned obsolescence):The ceiling in our large foyer needs replacing (its tiles were made in Scandinavia, and they and the systems holding them in place are no longer available).

Unrepentant Marryatt confuses ongoing pay rise wth one-off performance bonus.
The Christchurch City Council's controversial chief executive has defended his $68,000 pay rise, saying it is recognition of his performance during a year in which he has "never worked as hard in my life".

Asked whether he should accept the increase after such a tough year for many Christchurch residents, Marryatt said his job was more important than ever.
"I would say there is a case for the exact opposite. My job has grown immensely. The market remuneration we are talking about is not for my new job, it is for my old job. It is for what the council was in September 2010. The benefit is for the city if they have a motivated and high-performing CEO," he said.
He would have considered his position in Christchurch if the pay rise had not been approved by councillors.
"It would have depended how council framed it. I feel I should be paid fair remuneration for the position and if the council had said, `Here is the market remuneration, but your performance has dropped so we are going to pay you like this', I would have said, `Fine, how do I improve my performance?' If they had just said, `Here is what you are performing at, but politically we are going to pay you this.' That would have put me in a position of saying, `Is that how a good employer should operate?' That would have got me thinking," he said.

'S ok. All the council workers will get a 14.4% pay rise too because they have been working so hard. In fact. give them all a $68,000 pay rise, that would be better than boring old percentages.
