Meanwhile, in today’s Star Times, Colin Espiner doubles down on Clayton Cosgrove’s “It’s like the Crusaders losing Richie McCaw” and declares that Jones’ departure is “more like the All Blacks losing McCaw. To France.”
Good grief.
And the HoS devotes an incomprehensible editorial to the topic:
In the long-term, Labour needs people like Davis. But in the short-term (the only terms in which most senior MPs think) Labour may want Harawira.
Because of MMP’s derided coat-tails rule, Harawira can win just the one seat and bring in another MP from the Mana Party, perhaps a couple more from the Internet Party when they formalise their ragtag alliance in two week’s time. This would provide Cunliffe with a real prospect of toppling John Key from power – despite the fact that Labour is trailing about 17 poll points behind National.
Jones missed out on winning the leadership. But what he did this week was force the hand of the Labour leadership.
Cunliffe and Co must now decide whether to throw their support behind Davis, and set out on the long road to build Labour back to its one-time glory as the party of the working man and woman. Or they can give Davis a comfy list placing, and throw Te Tai Tokerau back to Harawira and its richest resident, Dotcom of Coatesville.
Eh? Davis is unlikely to win Te Tai Tokerau from Harawira, but he can certainly do some good for Labour’s party vote. And he will surely receive a good list placing. The HoS’s strange either-or scenario doesn’t make any sense at all.

Collarer epidemic blues...
Clayton Cosgrove
Espiner has really lost the plot.
When he says Cosgrove is the man for 'disgruntled male blue collar voters' - here in Chchch I'd say Clayton Who?
Has Espiner ever talked to any 'male blue-collar workers' to back this up?His recycling of Cosgrove's risible McCaw equivalence might make more sense if (a) Jones had been the captain and a team player; and (b) if he'd played the full game, instead of dropping the ball at the breakdown...
But at least now now I have solid benchmarks of disconnection to refer to when I hear Espiner's opinions - actually both Espiners come to think of it (perhaps they have a brand?) - I'll ignore them.
(I do wish they weren't presenting as a tag team with so many ears and eyes on them.)In a nutshell - Espiner admires greed.

Darien Fenton (18th) - heard of her but again can't think of much she's done.
Sideshows like this one from Darien Fenton about the Lego Movie come to mind. While it's laughable, I just hope it doesn't galvanise perception of 'nanny statism' or 'being precious'.

(I do wish they weren't presenting as a tag team with so many ears and eyes on them.)I'm kind of torn. Guyon managed to make Prostetnic Vogon Joyce squirm on 60 Minutes over the SkyCity convention centre affair - not many have been able to pull that off.

Who hasn't Graham McCready sued yet?

'male blue-collar workers'
I have a blue shirt on today. I'm male. And I'm working (apart from a short break to bollox on here).
I have no interest in Clayton Cosgrove or any of those has-been righties. The weekend's announcement on drug policy has reinforced me in my policy of never voting for Labour candidates, let alone at party level. I'll be voting Green, although if they flex their backbones and support prohibition-under-urgency, it'll be Dotcom/Mana getting my vote, money and possible shoe-leather.

I'd expect Mana to support it. So you got Dotcom (who can't even stand) or ACT (who you can't stand). In other words, you got bupkis.

Kumara Republic, in reply to
Rajen Prasad (20th) – heard of but only in terms of his laziness, ineffectiveness and jokes about him being one of the worst MPs – yet he was higher than many worthy candidates.

And now we know how National dunnit:
Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced this morning Mr Jones was appointed as the Ambassador for Pacific Economic Development and would also serve as High Commissioner to several small island countries in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
As anticipated, he’s been appointed to a legitimate HOM role which gets around the legal restrictions on the Minister hiring people outside the SSC.
