I am also ambivalent about Vista. Had it on my desktop for a while, but it was just a slow dog, even with 2GB of RAM on a Core2 Duo (Vista 'experience' score of 5.2 or something).
I am excited about Windows Home Server however. Just got in on the beta and am now building a box to run it on. Apparently using the 'single instance' storage some users have backed up 220GB of various crap around the house onto 60GB on Home Server.
Basically it stores every file (well, cluster actually) only once, and keeps pointers if multiple computers share the same cluster (e.g. portion of the same MP3 file or Windows dll or image). Great for people that have a similar collection of stuff on both a laptop and a desktop.

RE: mystery Telecom spam
Don't know if it's the same one - but I got email from Telecom telling me that
"In accordance with instructions received, your Telecom account is no
longer subscribed to Bill Online. The invoice(s) for this account will no longer be
delivered to you electronically. Your next invoice(s) will be paper based."Except I haven't emailed them since I registered, and I really would prefer to keep getting my bill online thanks.
Thought it was a hoax - but the number is the correct Telecom one - so tried calling - but no answers as yet.
I'll be slightly pissed off when/if I start getting boxloads of tree through my mailbox again.

Dell are still selling XP machines, but you have to find the link that says "Do you still want to buy a computer with XP?" before they'll show them to you. Most of the high street stores (even Quay computers, which I used to think had a bit more nous than the others) are 90% Vista only now, and look at you strangely if you say you don't want it. Mind you, any place that thinks WXGA counts as a high resolution screen isn't worth your time.
In the end I went with ascent.co.nz: that's a really sueful filter engine they've got there.

On Safari slowdowns, seems Dave Hyatt has already fixed the underlying issues in recent nightly builds, and that Macenstein have re-run their tests and confirmed huge improvement:

Vista...My understanding is that with both XP and Win 95/98 there was a clear public move to quickly upgrade existing machines which led to the mass surge of the OS after release. This clearly is not happening with Vista...I actually don't know a living soul whose rushed out and bought an upgrade for their existing machine.
New machines, since most people don't buy a new PC every year (or even two), will take a lot longer to penetrate the online users mass
