Yesterday some live version of 'Dominion Road' came on randomly as I was driving home. As Don McGlashan (and I) sang 'he can see the antennas in the hills' I realised that I was actually looking at them. It was A Moment.

Speaking of NZ locations, I quite liked this KnightShade video, featuring the Meremere power station before it was turned into a Totalspan. That stretch of river is pretty too.
I really liked AA Gill too – here’s Al Brown’s blog where he admits he was shitting bricks, with bonus pic of their Kahawai.

New vinyl release for me this week is David Kilgour’s Left by Soft. Deconstructed CD cover glued into place; hand numbered and signed. He still sounds like the young bloke who did Here Come the Cars.

Communists really do great things with concrete, don't they? I remember driving through Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in about 1985. In Bulgaria, in particular, we weren't allowed to stop in many places, but we passed lots and lots of concrete structures like this. It's another testament to just how different people can be, that someone actually liked the designs enough to commission them.
We were warned, in advance of going to Yugoslavia, that the petrol was awful. Something about the additives made it very slippery when it dripped (inevitably) from the Zastavas and other "behind the Iron Curtain" cars onto the roads. We were told that the roads could be as slippery as ice during rains. Indeed, that turned out to be the case. In about three days of driving up the Dalmatian coast, we saw, I think, 12 major accidents involving many, many vehicles in each case. In one event, the driver of a little car had attempted to overtake another vehicle while going through one of the many long raw-rock-lined road tunnels, and went directly under an oncoming large truck.
The road was much like a paved provincial New Zealand highway with one lane in each direction. Consequently, the traffic jams were huge. I remember one was at least 3 kilometres long, on just one side of an accident.
We came very close to involvement in a pileup ourselves: somewhere ahead of us, two vehicles collided and those behind braked. Each slid into the next. Our brakes appeared completely ineffective, as our aged kombiwagen continued in the direction it had been going, with no loss of speed. I'm still not sure how we managed to avoid hitting another vehicle; most other vehicles around us seemed to collide, in a series of soft "krumps", followed by expletives - mainly in German.
In recent years, I've noticed that NZ petrol smells more like the Yugoslavian petrol of those days.

In Wellington on Wednesday morning I made my last ever visit to the soon to be closing Real Groovy, where I bought a copy of Billy Bragg's 1991 8 x 7" Box set, Don't Try This At Home. Turns out it's not that rare, or that expensive on eBay, but $10 seemed pretty reasonable to me. And it reminded me that on this song alone he had guest appearances from Stipe and Buck, and the list of collaborators on the whole album (here) is sort of staggering. RIP Real Groovy Wellington.

Wow. The first Death Cab for Cutie citation on PAS. I really like their music (especially Narrow Stairs) but know so little about them. How many of them are there? Why did they choose such a stupid name? Where does Zooey fit in?

I was impressed by AA Gill's session at the Auckland Readers and Writers Festival, in which I thought he showed unexpected generosity of spirit.
Mum really enjoyed him. She thought that the Al Brown pairing was an odd one but didn't think it mattered too much, since she said Brown didn't manage to get much of a word in edgewise. (What she said was - "it reminded me of a conversation with you, darling." How rude.)
It’s a dub of one of the worst songs ever – Foreigner’s ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’ -- and it’s actually really, really nice.
I resemble that remark. Nothing wrong with a bit of Foreigner.
