I had a gander at it yesterday and it worked fine.

I know I hardly ever contribute, but I'm a devoted lurker. I write lots of responses in my head, but someone always expresses what I'm thinking so much better. But I'll be there and it would be good to meet up with some of you. All of you - not excepting anyone here. You see why I don't often post. But I want to say how important some of you have been to me these last few years.

Considering about 10 minutes after I posted that my internet crapped out completely, it may well be a problem at my end. I'll try again now. And if it still doesn't work, it's probably down to one of those irritating little technical issues that occasionally renders every NZ website unavailable for a few hours. Not much to be done about that, although I suspect if Kim Dotcom gets that 2nd cable built things might improve.

Just before the US presidential election I bumped into a friend and asked how his daughter was (she's married to an American and they've lived in Chicago for almost 20 years).
He said they were ok, but about to arrive back in NZ to live. "They reckon America's f--ked", he said (meaning politically, economically, socially).
There's a school of thought that this is the real reason for Jim Cameron moving here.

This absurd myth that Gower somehow manufactured that story is part of what's so deeply damaged about the New Zealand online left.

I don't have a position on that - wasn't there, have no way to filter the many conflicting accounts from those with dogs in the fight, as it were.

A somewhat epistemically pessimistic view there!
I was there, and while I hardly expect you to take my word for what happened, in my view, the way that the blogospheric left is trapped in a fantasy world is very hard to get past.
(Basically I think that the vast bulk of online left commentary in NZ is trapped in a degenerative research project, to adopt a Lakatosian framework, and it's really really annoying.)

It could also be your server, and the more heavily restricted sphere of influence. I was banned from teaching global classes when the ping tests showed I was averaging 550ms (+ dropped packets) to our US server from Beijing (China Unicom), to the south of that bubble I’m on China Telecom and the average is 242ms.
Tangentially I recently had an Italian student (on learning of my nationality) complaining in class about the New Zealand Government arresting Kim Dot Com and his losing out on his lifetime membership to Mega whatever-it-was, I didn’t have time to set him straight as to who tows our nation’s rope, which I guess is loosely on topic…

What's the project? You have some core auxiliary hypotheses in mind, that need to be reconsidered?

I reckon addressing another example like that would have strengthened your post.
Entirely likely, however writing posts is not like writing code for me. That I'm rather disciplined at, quite analytical about, and feels entirely natural to be working on (in fact it is usually hard to stop me prior to an exhausted collapse).
Writing text is a whole different game. I write when I'm annoyed and about whatever I am annoyed about at the time. The irritation usually comes through in the post. But really if you have a look around the world at the non-professional non-media bloggers then you'll find that is often what blogging is all about.
I could be writing about the pain of trying to get a dual boot between android and ubuntu on my new nexus7 (what I'm doing at present), and between the technical instructions about how to do it, you'll find a whole lot of detail on "why did they make this so freaking HARD!!!!". Or why Orcon's customer support has gone totally down the toilet and who knows of a good alternate supplier...
However since I'm writing about a technique most widely used in blogging I wrote about a blogger lying by omission..

Hmm..., yes, another distinct possibility. The mountains may be high, but the emperor is awfully bloody close. And it's NPC/CPPCC season, so the screws are tightened a little tighter than normal.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer till the loosening, I'm excited to see what kinds of shifts this tenure brings, looking forward to your reports from the front line.

I've resisted spreading this spat to here but I feel I should respond to this comment. Lynn, you have accused my of "lying by omission" - a strange accusation because every writer omits some facts and detail. You admitted you omitted things from your post.
But in particular here you have omitted an important fact - you were wrong on a number of claims you made (you had to admit one). In your initial post you made claims and accusations that omitted any supporting facts, and in comments since it became clear you were wrong - it turns out I was better informed about your own author/s on your blog than you, so it was a falsehood on your part, not mine.
I'm not going to continue this here, you know where you can discuss it without having to keep moaning on other people's blogs where you are lying by omission.

Oh, great.
Might I suggest you chaps take this out to the carpark now?

That's just gross. A motel room at least.
Post your response…
