  • 3410,

Forgive me for oversimplifying, but sometimes it boils down to this: Some people are just douchebags.

  • Craig Ranapia,

It just seems ironic that the packages respectively marked "radical feminist" and "grumpy old Christian bigot" appear to hold such similar contents.

Why? I long ago came to the conclusion that the political spectrum is actually a circle of life where the loony left and rabid right come together in perfectly harmonious cretinism.

  • Emma Hart,

    I called it...

    Automatic humanity FAIL.

For instance, as a "political lesbian", she tends to regard women who are lesbians merely because they feel love and attraction towards other women, as frivolous backsliders.

I remember a conversation I had on a blog a couple of years ago with a woman complaining that her uni lesbian group had been taken over by political lesbians. "They keep saying lesbianism is about rejecting the patriarchy and the inherent power imbalance of penis-in-vagina sex. No it's not, it's about wanting to have sex with women!"

Something has gone seriously wrong when that needs saying.

    Wow.

Must admit my main thought (after the first few screensful of blog) was that it must be raining really REALLY hard in Auckland today :-)

  • Craig Ranapia,

BTW, am I bad person for having a mental picture of a woman having an orgasm over a photo of Margaret Thatcher every time I hear the phrase "political lesbian"?

"They keep saying lesbianism is about rejecting the patriarchy and the inherent power imbalance of penis-in-vagina sex. No it's not, it's about wanting to have sex with women!"

Oy... reminds me of a friend who responded to that kind of malarky by saying (well, bellowing to be precise): "I'll give you my strap on when you take it from my cold, dead pussy". Was sooo tempted to have that put on a bumper sticker. :)

Craig - its' gonna take a lot of drinking to get that picture out of my head. Thanks a bunch mate.

  • Yamis,

and the inherent power imbalance of penis-in-vagina sex.

They need to look at it differently.

The vagina is engulfing the penis.

Go on admit it, you are all sitting there now picturing that.

  • Stewart,

I gave up reading Julie Bindel a while back after only a couple of her 'comment' columns in the Grauniad. She came across as one of those people who are so certain of their own views that they hold all the facts and anything said contrary to their own 'wisdom' is obviously wrong and, dammit, patronising and threatening to them.
Haven't got much time for Julie Burchill's smug witterings, either. I seem to have failed to notice her crackling prose.
I saw some of that exchange between the 2 sainted Julies and was confounded as to what their point was. "All men are shits" seemed to just about cover it but even I know that's not the case. Gender and sexual orientation are part of the great mix that comprises we humans and there's good and bad across the board. I have no time for such self-righteous absolutists. (I've got no time for plenty of stuff I would enjoy, never mind that crap.)

Yamis, thanks for the reversal of the power imbalance. Made me smile.

I always thought there was something suspiciously feminine about his features.

Still not as shifty as that Paul Henry fella, but.

Obviously there are nutters everywhere...but doesn't the Guardian have an editor? Don't they have some kind of "must not be totally hatstand" requirement?

I was wondering if it was a calculated ploy to gain market share of those who agree or those who wish to disagree.

  • Simon Grigg,

I'll cheerfully read Burchill writing tripe, because she does so in sizzling prose, is madly funny and will occasionally conjure a brilliant thought.

My favourite Burchill quip (from NME circa '78) was:

Absolutely the only records anyone ever needs to own are the first three Sex Pistols single.... and everything ever released on Tamla Motown.

  • Stewart,

I have realised why I don't like Julie Bindel (amongst others) - it is the humourlessness. OK, as well as the self-righteous gobshitery...

Suspect the lesbians of my acquaintance would try and exchange the gift for store credit -- nowhere near enough fun, and certainly not butch enough to give the femmes a tingle.

  • TracyMac,

I have to say - and excuse my language - fucking "political lesbians" give me a fucking stitch.

I don't need these twits to confer their "solidarity" on my sexuality. I resent the implied biphobia that goes with their views - that it's so much more radical to ID as a dyke than to deal with the genuine crap that bi people often encounter.

And to be honest, most lesbians of my acquaintance get on with men fairly well, because we are lesbians because we fancy women, not because of some fucked-up perception of men.

I do somewhat agree with the fact that our sexual expression isn't entirely innate - I tend to think it's a combination of actual inbuilt (by whatever mechanism) tendencies and some conditioning. For example, I myself (like most lesbians) could not be termed 100% gay (and unlike other lesbians, I will actually have sex with men at long intervals, if there's nothing else around), but I'm not as bisexual as I might be due to the fact that many men are still mired in sexist crap to a greater or lesser degree, and I don't want to deal with it.

Heh, it sounds like I'm a political lesbian! But honestly, I'm 95% gay, I don't seek out men as partners, and I can't see myself ever getting romantic about one. The people who do have the capability (of being bisexual or even mostly straight) and who deny it, are as bad as the "ex-gays" in various Christian movements, IMO.

It's compounded by the fact that they feel they have the right to speak for all feminists or all lesbians. Ok, there is such a thing as a polemical call to arms, but effectively saying "my way is the best and only way" is irritating, to say the least.

Also, I agree with Russell's remarks on the quality of the Grauniad's feminist writers in general - in between their professions of political lesbianism (not all of them, of course) and diatribes against the sex trade (sure, much of it is vile, but it doesn't have to be) and "sex-positive" feminists, I tend to skip over most of their columns. I'll stick to Shakesville, Pandagon and Shapely Prose for the bulk of my feminist reading.

As for Garth George as a lesbian...

    ::wibble::

That's even worse than the Margaret Thatcher image.

  • Islander,

So much to comment on, so little physical ability to do so - just one point: sexual expression in asexuals does seem to be innate- whether a rat, a ram, a baboon or a human, some are just wired to be uninterested.

And Bindel reads as a screw-loose fukwit.

  • Scott A,

fucking hell, is about all I can say about that. As Islander said: so much to comment on, so little physical abilty to do so.

But, well, all I can say is that Bindel sexually degrades me. She debases me. Fuck it, she rapes me.

I feel soiled, and fouled, and awful. After reading what she writes.

Honestly, let me call a spade a spade. She is evil. Wicked. Nasty. Dire. Foul. Bad, just bad.
