    Now that I've figured out how to turn down the brightness on my new monitor so that all the white is no longer searing my eyeballs, I think I like it.

    Hi, for older browsers in which the slideshow doesn’t run I’d suggest bookmarking the posts page which lists all posts in reverse order. Thanks for reporting the other issues, we’ll look into those missing archives.

    There is one little thing about the new look I'm finding a bit disappointing. I used to like some of the "origins" people put. Joe Wylie's for example, always made me smile. But now, it's truncated to "Down on my knees.." (could be even less, but I'm nervous of spooling back and not being able to find this page again - am I revealing just how hopeless I really am at this stuff?) If you hover over it, the whole lot changes, so it's not something you can discover in any way. Probably not terribly important, but a fun thing that seems to have disappeared.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned but in the “Cafe” section when I hover over things they disappear
    I am using Windows XP
    Means I have to stab in the dark (or light actually)
    It seems to affect the top entry and then ever other one...strange eh
    Other than that I really like the new upgrade from the beta system and can live with that one problem

    Yeah, definitely much slower here, Fortunate that this is aimed primarily at thə Zew Nealand clientele, Also, this new 'Hard News' font and its placement slipping off the top edge of the banner is not On. Generally the layout feels good though.

    Chris, the placement is a deliberate design decision – matches the Public Address logo

    The public address instance works because it’s the neutral colour of the background, creating an illusion of the letters as pipes branching through the speech bubble. The new font here reminds me of the Truth. Tabloid compared to the previous digicool.

    Don’t get me wrong, I’m just offering some points that stick out, worst stuff I can find, no other purpose than to provide feedback.

    The design geek in me is always happy if any font choice draws a response. Was merely saying the placement wasn't a technical error of some sort.

    Yeah, I didn't think it would be any error Sacha, it simply doesn't sit well with me, I'm no font expert, but I'm wondering if this is a print font/screen font conflict I'm feeling here?

    Jacqui, this was more a practical decision that anything else. We might add them back to the user’s page that lists all their comment posts.

    Chris, yes the slowdown is likely due to the fact that we’ve moved the site from San Francisco to Auckland during the changeover. Better for the vast majority of the readership, but we’re continuing to make performance improvements.

    A few more issues:


    I still don’t think that…

    "First ←Older Page 1 … 7 8 9 10 11 Newer→ Last"

    … makes as much sense as the old – and simpler –

    "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11"

    It is simultaneously more complicated and less usable.


    The “Last Post” link is in the time of the last posted. To go to the end of a thread, I need to click, eg, “09:57AM, 15 Nov 2010”. Why not the link from the words “Last Post” which is what the user wants? Also, hovering over “09:57AM, 15 Nov 2010” makes my cursor arrow change to cursor arrow with question mark, (in Firefox). This seems unnecessary, if not incorrect.

    “A day ago” or even “14 hours ago”, etc. as a time stamp is not useful. If I want to go back to the last comment I read, I need to know the absolute time that comments were made. If I last read a thread at 3pm yesterday, then that’s what I want to go back to, rather that having to calculate how many hours ago that was, every time.

    Where the link, on PAS, that used to say “Read Original Post” (or some such) used to be, it now just has the title of the post. This is anti-intuitive as it looks like the headline for the page that one is currently on, rather that a link to another page.

    Once again, apologies for the apparent negativity; I'm just trying to make note of issues that are performing sub-optimally, so that performance can be made better for everyone. :)

    I read this post on my iPhone this morning... Three comments:

    1. iPhone interface is really nice.
    2. There's no margin on the right-hand side -- text can abut the edge of the screen. A little margin would make it easier to read.
    3. I was reading it with the web browser within Bylines (an RSS reader that syncs with google reader) and I couldn't log in. Log in works fine with mobile safari, so not sure what's up with that.

    Not a cosmetic request. I'd still like to be able to see a list of older posts please. A "Show More" button perhaps?

    There's currently no way of finding a post if it slips off the Recent Discussions/Cafe listing then except via Search (which does not always produce a result and is not configurable).

    If it is valuable to keep discussions about a topic together rather than spread across whichever threads are current at various times then this seems fundamental. That's a decision for Russell.
