  • Christopher Dempsey,

If I could slip in between the pearl barley recipes and chicken soup for the soul tips could I just say:

    Old. Boys. Network. Crony. Capitalism.

Indeed a fine example of this network, but it's the scale that's interesting; when did Nactional start going from Pipi Foundation scale to this?

Thinking about the ECan scandal as well, I think it's about time another C-word came out of mothballs too: corruption.

  • Steve Barnes,

So, three guys get $4.8 million for what exactly?
They claim to be able to do a lot
The EDANZ(Economic Development Agencies of Zealand) don't list Pacific Economic Development Agency (Limited) as a member.
Is this overseas development money? If so why is it not going to a Government agency?
What's the deal with the same guys being involved in an investment company that seems to be invisible on the web?
Since when has a private company been part of the Governments Budget?.
    All these questions and more.

Got nothing on these guys - not that they're getting big bucks in te Budget, I'd hasten to add

  • Russell Brown,

Mose Saitala is director of the Commonwealth Pacific Governance Facility, a Commwealth Secretariat initiative launched in the Solomons last month to do, um, something. It's not entirely clear.

He's ex-UNDP, so clearly has experience, but quite what he's doing also taking NZ government funding as director of a private company in New Zealand I'm not sure.

It does look like a conscious attempt to shift influence in the sector.

  • Steve Barnes,

It does look like a conscious attempt to shift influence in the sector.

Not by controlling the Media, surely?

Threatening dark clouds loom over the future of the region’s main media body, the Pacific Islands News Asociation (PINA)....

As a way to grow its revenue base, the consultants are suggesting that PINA develops and implements donor-funded capacity building projects that address the needs of its members.
It should also consider tapping into European Union funding for civil society organisations, and that the PINA Secretariat employs stringent cost-monitoring accounting practices.
“The level of expenditure would normally be determined against future revenues the organisation is expected to raise in the next financial year,” said the Aaivao and Saitala report.

Aaivao and Saitala may well be upright individuals with nothing but the best intentions but what is this doing in the Budget? I think it needs explaining at least.

  • recordari,

"There are pockets of communities in severe hardships. It will also stifle economic growth ... if nothing is done with this sector of the population. so we're trying to lift that."

Is this just the usual bad editing, or are they quoting verbatim, to show they're 'down with it?' Way down.

And yes, I appreciate the irony of me commenting on editing, but then I'm not employed by a newspaper.

  • Russell Brown,

    From the Herald link:

He likened Peda to Government social services policy Whanau Ora, but for Pacific communities and with a focus on helping Pacific businesses.

He said the agency had worked with former All Blacks and staunch National Party supporters Inga Tuigamala and Michael Jones, but only in the relief work following the tsunami in Samoa last year.

Mr Tuigamala said last night that he and Mr Jones were not involved with the agency, nor did they have any hand in the granting of government money. "It has nothing to do with us."

More and More indications of something being rotten in the deal.
Why do I suspect a National Party Election rort here? Are they gearing up for a taxpayer funded stab at the Pacific Island vote that has, traditionally, gone to Labour?

Though not a peep here for a week (only "questions asked" on the 25th).

Likewise, no sign there of what should be the biggest story of the day, namely that the banking ombudsman has found that ANZ told large investors to get out of the collapsing ING fund, while telling small investors that it was all good.
