  • Islander,

As people who have worked in shitty jobs- as I have worked in shitty jobs for much of my working life-we garner a respect for representative uinions. They stand between us, and an omnivorous uncaring employing class. I am very sure that the people Sofie mentions
    a)exist, and
b)have either left or will do so - dependent on what Key offers - because sometimes things just get too hard.

Yours, shortly to bugger off into obscurity, because things are getting too hard.

  • Kumara Republic,

Helen Kelly appears to have a wider strategy of industrial 5th columnism - not necessarily a bad thing per se - to keep the Key Govt honest on industrial relations.

Up until the Hobbit War, it seemed to be working well - the proposed visit by the AFL-CIO's Richard Trumka was a case in point.

Things are going to get very bloody hard for NZ film technicians, if Key can't get a deal together.

  • nzlemming,

You know, if we didn't have employers, people wouldn't have jobs. #justsaying

Can we leave the class war stuff on Kiwiblog and the Standard please?

It guaranteed that some employers are aresholes just as some employees are aresholes and undoubtedly some individual contractors are also arseholes. Generalisations about "class" are a waste of time.

  • Islander,

    nzlemming: class, in ANZ, exists.
It is not the old world style class.
It is 'the monied' versus the rest of us.
That is the fact of the matter.

People had jobs in other kinds of societies - you were a fisher,a weaver, a birder, a tohuka, etcetera.

Those kind of specialities, and that kind of society, may very well come back. Kaipurakau were much more esteemed, then-

  • Sacha,

I believe the issue is when people make sweeping statements about *all* members of a class or caste (or hod).

We seem to achieve a more interesting discussion when that's avoided, which is not to say you can't make strong points. And thank you, Mr Hood.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

No Dexterx, one good thing was that people are getting a bigger picture of how some people had a few issues with their employ, and some parts of employment aren't fair ,that's life. RM is entitled to her opinion just as you are yours. She iterated that she has her own contracts , doesn't use a union, but sympathised with others. She's allowed isn't she? People got to know about their feelings because a bunch of people in the industry showed up for a meeting.
And yes I know some people that have got out of the industry because they felt they weren't always treated fairly.
    That's life.

Sounds a little like Ted Kaczynski, don't get me wrong, I like that about you.

Ur, chris, my idea of societies and Ted's idea of "Society" are a thousand thousand miles apart-

I can only speak for what self & most family would find congenial- here.
And, we have (to use that ancient phrase) always pulled our weight...

I know, just pulling your leg. I'm quite keen on your vision.

Sofie. nice post expanding on JT's beaut sentiment, there's been a fair amount of heat expended in the last couple of weeks, I am glad to see the battle lines being smudged and erased.

Ever heard of cooperatives? Or self employed people? Or people employed by the state, therefore essentially by themselves? Just saying.

  • Pat Hackett,

Three massive threads, thanks to Russell. The most information on the dispute on any NZ blogs.

Yet...there are many things we still don't know:

    1. How many members did/does NZAE have?
    2. Whose decision was it to send the August 17 letter?
    3. Why was Spartacus never targeted?
    4. What percentage does MEAA take of residuals?
    5. Does Simon Whipp get a bonus/percentage of residuals he brings in?
    6. What are the terms of Jackson's residuals and how did they vary from MEAA residuals?
    7. What conditions on the Hobbit were inferior to the guidelines in the PinK Book?
    8. Who is telling the truth between Spada and NZAE about who wouldn't talk to who over the past 2 years?
    9. Was Simon Whipp merely acting on instructions from NZAE, or was he driving it?
    10. When Helen Kelly intervened, why did she not force Simon Whipp to front the media instead of owning the mess herself?
    11. What was the real reason for the delayed announcement on the lifting of the boycott (what do the emails say)?
    12. Why did NZAE impose a boycott BEFORE canvassing their membership on changes that they want to see in their contracts and/or the Pink Book?

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Thing is Chris, this is a group of people with a passion for the exact same Industry/jobs/self employed positions that is quickly falling into an "us and them" situation and for which they, will end up working together again. Then what? Unless each person acknowledges that there is a difference of view and that each can have a different view without being told they are wrong, working together is going to be horrible. I suspect this was not about possible job losses I suspect it was about unity for the good of the film Industry.

  • DexterX,

Sofie Bribiesca - It isn't about "feelings" and "working together is going to get horrible" - it is primarily about saving the Te Hobbit and the jobs that went with it.

It is stems from the imposition of the blacklist - which is where the shit hits the fan.

With NZAE - MEAA(NZ)I - incoporated on 8 Oct and the papers filed to incoporate on 27 Sept.

How did people get appointed to the NZEA - MEAA(NZ)I governing committee - were they voted in, when were the elections held, did MEAA Oz appoint them - or did they appoint themselves?

for information, the insertion of a random variable-

(entropy per se is sure as shit NOT natural order- it always implies decay (thus I understand: really happy to learn more.))

  • DexterX,

Entropy conceptually considered is that the "elements" in a system evolve to the greatest level of entropy - disorder. It is a why the measured universe is forever expanding and not contracting.

It might have been Einstein that considered the natural order of thing was that they evolved to their greatest level of entropy possible. It is part of thermodynamics and physics and chemistry.

When you try to say harness the energy in system entropy is the measure of how much of that energy is unavailable to you. With a system that has a high level of entropy your efforts to harness energy that you can use will likely be fruitless.

So when you design, create or release something you have to be cognisant of the likely level of entropy.

In the context of the shambles created by NZEA - MMEA(NZ)I - the situation has evolved to an impressively high level of entropy - in that the people that sought to control the employment environment of others by dropping the blacklist bomb have no control over the result and the result will have no benefit to them - such that it may even take them out of the game.

IMHO taking them out of the game would appear to be a good outcome.

  • Simon Bennett,

    8. Who is telling the truth between Spada and NZAE about who wouldn't talk to who over the past 2 years?

I was party to discussions with MEAA and SPADA during the Outrageous Fortune stoush. MEAA on behalf of the cast were demanding an industry-wide standard contract for Series 6. SPP couldn't provide this and referred MEAA to SPADA as the appropriate body to discuss this with. SPADA offered to meet with MEAA and the agents to discuss the Pink Book guidelines. MEAA refused to meet. They were only interested in a binding, industry-wide contract.

This was nearly 2 years ago. I read all the correspondence.
