  • Kyle Matthews,

    Is that... Brett LEE?

Apparently it's massive in India. He's more a rock star there than a cricket star.

  • Richard Irvine,

This is my fav cricket vid, non-musical as it is:

Yes, the 'getting permission to watch cricket, that game that goes for hours and can wind up a DRAW!?!' conundrum is a toughy. Thankfully, my beloved thinks cricket's great as 'background noise', ie we often have it on while cooking, reading etc, so I can keep a sneaky eye on it without totally burning all my sport watching tickets.

She likes watching rugby though (and haz Eden Park season ticket). I love her.

    Is that... Brett LEE?

    Indeed!

And the woman he's duetting with is Asha Bhosle, the famous Hindi singer immortalised in the title of Cornershop's 'Brimful of Asha'.

    True fact.

  • Emma Hart,

Mine's sort of a scrambled MEEP, as several hundred smart arse comments try to escape my mouth all at the same time.

    Indeed, that's it exactly.

Also I know all the lyrics to that Paul Kelly Bradman song. I feel so sad and geeky right now...

I know all the lyrics to that Paul Kelly Bradman song

That's it. Emma and I were separated at birth.

He was more than just one man, he was half the bloody side!

And the woman he's duetting with is Asha Bhosle, the famous Hindi singer immortalised in the title of Cornershop's 'Brimful of Asha'.

    Huh! Gosh, System is educational.

We actually use the phrase 'hey Whitey, that's my rabbit' around the house when appropriate.

  • Naly D,

That's awesome that he replied, but I wonder what would happen if he were to leave the Jets? Do people like him because he twitters his fans, or do people like him because he plays for the Jets and has twitter?

That Twenty20 mic'ed up stuff is crap. Go back 20 years to Bathurst and watch Seton, Brock, etc give interviews while driving with one arm out the window. Brilliant...

Thank you so much for that Russell. I have always struggled with that lyric thinking I can't possibly be hearing it correctly.

It's not Twitter, but bowler Iain O'Brien (recently but not currently in the Black Caps) has a blog on Cricinfo - it's quite good:

    http://blogs.cricinfo.com/iainobrien/

He manages to get a bit of personality across and provides good insight into what goes on around a cricket game.

There are a variety of other blogs on CricInfo as well :)

  • Richard Wain,

Whining about not having Sky is just lame people... either get it or don't moan. Oh heck, moan if you like... but it's still lame.

Sports make big money off TV coverage... that's why they're all there on pay TV. Your small contribution (and it doesn't cost much IMHO - I get all I need for $63 or something a month) merely helps pay the players' salaries. (Of course you can argue they get paid too much, true in many cases, but hey, that's capitalism. Only the worst system, apart from all the others...)

It's a lot cheaper than sitting in the pub! That's why I got it initially, that and the fact TV reception was so terrible round my place.

And anybody who was watching the tennis today on TV1 will know why free to air just can't cut it. Not the ad breaks so much (ESPN, sheesh!) but cutting to... The News? Just when the action's getting good? WTF? Ditto Maori TV's delayed and sporadic coverage of the Breakers...

Worst thing about pay TV? I'm with Haydn on this one: RIP afternoon rugby. Does anyone in the UK really watch our games anyway? Poor reason for scheduling night games in Dunedin, ever...

Replays on free to air, sure, why not? Because nobody watches it, that's why... At least that's what the last lot who gave up on screening rugby replays said... (can't remember which free to air it was)... I guess live's the deal and that's owned by Murdoch around here. Sad but true.

  • Yamis,

Richard, replays don't work alright. Not when they are 5 hours or 15 hours after the match. They need to be an hour or two delayed and then people will holdoff listening on the radio or can avoid the result and the game still feels 'fresh' (some rugby games fall into this category, the friday or saturday night ones from memory). I know, it's something I have had to deal with for 4 years. Not bad lasting that long as a sports nut.

I don't complain at all about SKY itself. They are set up to make a buck and have made sports viewing ten times better for those who can afford to get it (and a little over half the population either can't or don't want it). I just note that they haven't necessarily resulted in the increase in popularity of certain sports, in fact I think it's partially responsible for the decline in crowd numbers in rugby, cricket and league. They have certainly helped line lots of pockets though.

I've taken on a little more work this year that will earn me about enough to get a subscription to SKY. Now if only I can stop myself from buying timber for a fence or my wife from wallpapering another room I might just get it.... might...

  • Richard Wain,

Hmm, reckon you may have a point there... and IIRC it was Prime who had the replays last time I noticed and they of course are owned by Sky, so have little incentive to run it closer to the game... but TV3 also tried it and bailed out...

Not sure what the answer is on that one - aside from just getting in Sky - I don't have a house or wife so can probably afford it ;-)... I did without it for a while for complicated reasons that had nothing to do with money and everything to do with Rupert's Down Under monopoly and found Prime not very good for replays (but better than nothing).

I imagine the reason interest in rugby, for example, has waned is there's just too much of it. But conversely, there's a heck of a lot of football on the telly and I still sat down and watched something like 12-15 games over the Xmas period... OK enough now, people are laughing...

Thank you so much Danielle. I learnt a new word and I just love some of the examples.

I am so going to use Haffely, Gaffely, Gaffely, Gonward next time we charge into battle. Which should be tonight.

  • Bart Janssen,

Without wishing to moan about pay TV.

I think it is pretty well accepted that having a sport on free TV does increase participation both in players and spectators. There are examples in Britain where the shift to and from free TV has had strong effects on participation.

The question is, does the money the sport gets from pay TV outweigh the loss of participation?

For Rugby the problem seems to be more about restrictions on when games can be played. If we could get afternoon rugby we'd get better skills displayed and probably bigger crowds. How much does NZRU lose when they play a game at 2:30 pm as compared to 7:30 pm?

Cricket doesn't have that problem. For cricket it's simply a cost benefit equation. Does the game benefit more from having freeTV coverage and a gain in public involvement or are the dollars from payTV still too great to allow that to happen?

Personally I'm kinda hoping for a time when tests are on FreeviewHD and payTV can hang onto the ODIs and 20/20s.

  • Richard Irvine,

We've been analysing whether we can still afford SKY on one income - as we're around home a lot more with a small baby, it's our entertainment, basically, and $63 a month isn't toooo much to pay for that I reckon. It would only take one or two trips to the pub to equal $63 a month. (we get Sport only, no movies).

That and the fact that Rugby replays aside (that often finish in the wee small hours), the sport I'm interested in is pretty much exclusively on SKY, ie Cricket, Football, Cycling.

They've got us by the balls, basically.

  • Yamis,

I think the amount that SKY costs is perfectly reasonable for what you get. It's just when you are constantly in credit card debt at the end of each month and have to not spend a cent for a week that you realise that it's probably best to not have another 65 bucks adding onto that. Not when you have a house 60% through a tidy up/construction site phase anyway.

The reason for waning interest in rugby (as it's the best example) is clearly spread far and wide. You have it more or less inaccessable to around 50% of the population, you have games on at night which cuts back on family numbers, and those who prefer not to be sat in 5 degree temperatures in the rain, and you have such a vast amount of it that games lose significance and once people realise that then they stop caring 100% about whether they watch the game or not and start caring 73.4%.

I wonder how far TVNZ are looking at taking the freeview thingee with dedicated sports channels. If they can get it into enough homes then it could create a lot more competition for SKY resulting in them gaining less rights to sports and then having to cut their price back. A long way off though you'd have to think.

We might eventually end up with 15 boxes on our TV's and have conversations like ..."honey could you plug in the cycling decoder thanks,..... no, no, that's the boxing box you silly billy, the grey one, no, the grey one with the red stripe, that one if for the domestic rugby, yeah that's the one, cheers, ah fuck, the cycling's finished".

I hear this time and again but I'm yet to bump into these people who are apathetic to rugby. Even the scene art/emo kids at work follow rugby. 50% of the population don't have access? Last time I checked [which was about 5 minutes ago, given my occupation] rugby, cricket, tennis, bowls, racing, yachting and athletics commentary is still given for free on both BSport and Radio Sport. Or it's free to go to your local pub and sit on a glass of water for the duration of a game [which we employed to great effect during the RWC of first year.]
