Getting back to the grid girls,apparently the 2008 Australian Grand Prix had grid boys as well as girls – aka 'grid slot indicators'. They were trying to bring F1 to a biceps'n'pecks-appreciating audience.

Although the (now) Arizona Cardinals originated in Chicago and are one of the oldest surviving franchises (along with the Bears and Giants).

The Cardinals moved to St Louis, when the Bears took hold in Chicago, and (I believe) the baseball team was named after them.

The grid is the Starting Grid, (which is confusingly not always a grid because the cars can be staggered). The girls stand by the cars pre-start and hold umbrellas over the drivers…
