@Kyle, I agree with your suggestions and particularly the point about pairing - I too like McCullum but he needs the right support if he's going to be the main run-getter and perhaps he would be better lower down the order as he used to play.
I really hope NZ's competitive in the ODI series here. I'm keen to go to the game at the SCG, I've been to the last few and we've always done well, even if we've not won. The Aussie and RSA sides are bloody good, we'll need to perform at our best to win.

On a related point, it's been very interesting to see the Australian cricketing public really get behind the RSA side.
I think part of that has to do with Warne and Smith playing in the same 20/20 side in India. I remember when Warne side won the Indian tournament , he had a new-found respect for Smith, which was reported in the Australian newspapers

Did anyone see Duminy's scoop six in last night's 20/20? He is going to score a LOT Of runs in all forms.

While not wanting to take anything away from Guptill, the other debutant (N. Broome) made a valuable contribution. He came in during over 45 so had to start making runs immediately, and did so in a really composed way, finishing with the best strike rate (24 off 17 balls) of the NZ team.

Definitely. His job may not have been as glamourous as Guptill's, but he executed perfectly. Years from now, we may look back on Saturday as the day the nightmare ended.

There aren't many places where as a paying customer you are treated like a smuggler when you go in and potential pitch invader while you are there, wherever you are seated.
I remember the happy days at Lancaster Park, where the crowd wandered onto the field at half-time to look at the (roped-off) pitch while the kids played cricket round the boundary.
It was a great pressure release valve. I loved it.
I also loved taking my thermos - nothing like a cup of tea while watching the cricket.
I did drink Pimms at cricket once, my one and only test at Lords. At £12 a jug, at Lords, one jug between friends was enough!
I think Cricket has struggled since it went on SKY, as it has a more limited audience than the old free-to-air. It used to feel like everyone watched it - on TVs in shops, on Sports round-up.
It's popularity has waned.I also wonder how many kids who might be the BlackCapsoftheFuture are not playing back-yard cricket because they live in in-fill houses with no back yard.

They still do it for the tests at the Basin. Last year my son (then six) broke his bat in half while playing on the hallowed ground - he reckoned it was the power in the shot, but in truth the bat was seriously cracked to start with. Still, he has fond memory of his thundering cover drive at the basin. And I of diving for catches on that magnificently soft grass.

West Indies seem to be playing Vettori out (he's 10-0 off six overs) and might be trying to win the game off the other 40 overs. Which is brave.
However we don't really want Gayle to be in 10 overs from now (he's got 79 of 124 runs so far). That would be bad.

It was a fine innings by the Windies, but pretty random. I don't know if they applied much strategy to it.

134 of 243 when he got out. Bad, but a fantastic bad.

Waiting for the rain to end, they're showing a nine year old cricket max game now, and I must say it's riveting. Wait, did I say "riveting"? I meant "insanely boring".

Well that was a suitably crap way to end this drab one day series. DL may be a technically fair way of sorting out a shortened match result but it doesn't stop it being dull and vaguely ridiculous. To see the Windies go from time wasting between balls and overs while ahead to the Black Caps then doing the same as soon as they got their noses in front was not a particularly thrilling way to finish.
The frustrating thing is that every single match day has been fine and dry here in Nelson. NZ Cricket should chip in to getting a decent stadium here as the alternative venue for all matches.

Gotta say I agree with both Peter and Max - would love to see a game in either Nelson or Napier. It's been frustrating to follow from Sydney given that weather's had almost no significant impact on the current RSA tour...

Yeah, the lack of reserve days in this series looks silly. What's the bet it's fine today at McLean Park and they could have played the last 15 overs no problem.
Also, and I suspect this applies to most places around the country, since the washed out test, I think we've had two days of bad weather here in Dunedin.
