  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Russell Brown,

Wow, brilliant! Doesn't seem to have been the best of situations for Adams, great to see it all works out.

  • Rachel Prosser,

Why didn't Annie Lennox sing 'Sweet Dreams Are Made of This'?

    Perhaps the lyrics

"Some of them want to use you. Some of them want to get used by you. Some of them want to abuse you? Some of them want to be abused" weren't quite the vibe they were after?

I noted that Eric Idle didn't sing "Always look on the bright side of death...." I loved his face though at the Bollywood bit there. He was awesome.

But what was up with the sound?

  • Lilith __,

So happy for Valerie Adams. How must she feel, though? It’s not snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, it’s forcing defeat to regurgitate victory after it’s been eaten and partly digested….phthhhhh….

Um. I hope they can give Val some kind of fancy ceremony to make things right.

  • DexterX,

    Well

    <Fuck you Olympicsq>

The Curiosity probe so unsettled the Martians - they mucked it up and hired the Spice Girls rather than the Mysterons to deal to the city of London.

  • Simon Chamberlain,

So I was at the closing party in Hyde Park (Blur headlining with the Specials and New Order and Bombay Bicycle Club). Figured they'd have the closing ceremony on the big screen but it mostly clashed with Blur.

But they had a screen round the back of the main stage showing the closing ceremony. And there were probably a couple of thousand people (who had paid £60 to get in) standing around there, dancing and cheering to the Spice Girls. While Blur played. Incredibly strange.

(The bands were good, especially the Specials, but the volume was way too low and there were too many people chatting when the bands were playing).

    Val: Gold

NZOC: Phew...again. We can hide the administrative blunder a wee bit better now.

  • Megan Wegan,

One quick quibble: Sky put the men's basketball gold medal match on the MySky HD channels. I paid money to get Sky for the games, and I had to watch a fucking replay on Prime. Bastards.

But yeah. Much crying, much smiling ridiculously at stupidly happy athletes, and a lot of snacks and beer on my couch. I feel slightly bereft, now.

  • Hadyn Green,

So it seems NBC cut nearly an hour out of the ceremony. Prime doesn't seem so bad now.

  • Kyle Matthews,

The slightly humdrum closing ceremony really only underlined how extraordinary Boyle's great expression to open the party had been.

Interesting. I found the opening ceremony rather boring, particularly the first half which I really disliked.

The closing was OK. Who knows why George Michael got to promote his new song, and May gives every impression of covering up for being an average guitarist by being a dick with a guitar. Some of the bands were good though.

  • Hannah, in reply to JacksonP,

Did he sing the bit of 'Always look on the bright side' that goes 'Life's a piece of shit/ When you look at it'?

Why yes he did. Comes in around 6:05 over at youtube

The verse he changed, which I liked, goes something like "When you're stuck on the world's stage, with a bunch of loonies half your age, and everything is starting to go wrong, its too late to run away, you might as well just stay, especially when they play your silly song."

  • Jonty,

I think when we in Godzone can produce a spectacle half as good, maybe we'll have the right to crticise?

I belatedly discovered the brick-by-brick series from The Guardian. Presumably being unable to host any actual Olympics highlights footage on their site, they made their own - using lego. Legolympics, anyone?
