  • Chris Waugh, in reply to RaggedJoe,

Apple orchards, Columbia river, Wa state

Since apples would be a suprising crop and Columbia a strange river name in northern Burma, I assume by "Wa state" you mean Washington?

  • RaggedJoe,

Yes Chris, apologies for the incorrect abbreviation, Wa. State might have been clearer, but for sure Washington would have been better.

In fact I wish to attain a sate of Wa (Japanese (和?) = harmony) as the festive season approaches!

Under the bridge, in the dawn light.

Guanwang Miao at dawn - first time I've seen the door open.

  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Nora Leggs,

    Nice light there

We've been having great early morning light the last few weeks - a combination of low (by Beijing standards) smog and the sun rising late in the southeast. Frigid, but great light. Early bird! Huh! Combination of the need to get my wee one to kindy on time and having no classes scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Nobody in this house could be accused of being a morning person. Now, I learned from the old guy watching over that temple that it's open from 8am to 10:30am from the 1 to 15 of each month on the lunar calendar (although today is the 17, so I think he might want to check his calendar...), and I've found online that they've had temple fairs there at "小年"/"xiǎonián" (23 or 24 of the 12th month, roughly one week before CNY), so I'm definitely going to have to get back out there and learn some more about it. This morning at the temple I read a semi-explanation of why it's Guanwang Miao (关王庙) and not the more common Guandi Miao (关帝庙), but I need to find more...

  • JacksonP,

Thanks for all the wonderful photos everyone.

In order to get the prize in the post, we've made our decision a day early, as announced in our summer post 'Coast to Coast'.

ChrisW, if you could drop me a line with your details, that would be swell.

Hoping you all send in lots of summery photos to our new thread, and have a wonderful silly season.

Thanks Jackson – Marti Friedlander's Self-Portrait arrived yesterday as early Christmas present, and I’ve much enjoyed a good browse and reading the Writers and Artists section in particular.

The cover photo she explained as her first self-portrait, an impromptu effort in a hall mirror – but my first thought on seeing it askew like that was ‘Huh! – the great Marti Friedlander has trouble levelling her camera, too!’ But then thinks no, the camera if anywhere near the centre-line in a mirror selfie has to be the reference for level in the negative – this has been cropped and rotated as a matter of book cover design. So it’s satisfying to pick up among her many clearly expressed opinions that she enjoys bringing out alternative images in her negatives, that the 1970s PhotoForum dictate that a negative must always be printed whole is “rather idiotic”.

She has an incidental reference to being persuaded by Hamish Keith to agree to the use of one of her photos of Ralph Hotere as the basis for graffiti artist Askew’s tribute to him earlier this year – as featured on Capture: Art on the Street – askew again, multiple connections, very satisfying.

Excellent Chris. When you come across the photos of Marti and Gerrard on their trusty Lambretta, you can think about one of the greatest occasions of a photographic nature I had this year. They both presented slides and stories from their honeymoon through Eastern Europe in the 50s, and all that that entails.

Was hoping to share it on Capture, but the crew at Glory Days got there first. Which is Ok, cause I like their style. It certainly fits with the Travels Without a Map vibe. :-)

See page 41 of the Victorian Christmas edition.
