Strictly speaking, the use of any kind of extra processing on sunset pictures is cheating, but I quite like the effect of the "Sunset" setting in Camera+.

Technically these are skypools – complex reflection patterns at the water surface. -
The Esplanade at St. Clair, Dunedin, is a fairly tame bit of coast most of the time

This was taken from The Esplanade, facing along St. Clair beach at sunrise. I was taking a bunch of photos right through the day and got lucky with a pretty start.

Dunedin summer is a much underrated beast. Loooooong nights, temperatures much warmer than anybody who hasn't lived there will tell you, and with most of the scarfies out of town, nice and quiet. Alright, so my Dunedin years were my scarfie years, but I remember one summer when I put shoes on only twice - once to fly back to Wellington for Christmas, and once to fly back to Dunedin just after New Year.
I suppose I shouldn't really reveal the secret, but my four and a half years in Dunedin left me with the impression that the locals talked the climate colder than it actually is precisely to keep the population to a comfortable level. And an awful lot of out-of-town scarfies see the sense in this strategy.

Jan 23rd and Feb 14th, I have the dates circled on my calendar :)
To be fair even with the storms (hitting other parts of the country much worse) it has still be around 14, which is comfortable.
The thing is with a bit of a southern breeze the temperature can be in the high teens, low twenties and still be getting some very, very strong sunlight- that's why so many of my pictures are bright flower against dark background: they are pretty easy to line up naturally. -
