  • Kyle Matthews,

Where to even start with that one?

I think the Dom Post headline should have been:

Voters of Paraparaumu-Raumati Community elect man who turns out to be a complete fucking moron

  • daleaway,

I think the media has led you by your nose rings again.

No, Dale Evans is okay, he's no moron. He's a civic minded chap who has done the Wellington/Kapiti community a lot of favours in his time.

This time he made a bad judgement call, but a little context might explain why. It was in the course of satirising Kapiti mayor Rowan's being the poster girl for the current hoods-is-good non-campaign. Literally, that's her in the publicity photo scowling out from under a hood. Ms Photo-Op herself.

His version of a hood is quite funny in its way, and taking the hoodies' slogan to its logical conclusion ... but where using an image of the Klan is concerned, people are into knee jerk territory, so non-Kapiti readers would fail to make the connection. Guess liberals still have some taboo topics for humour.

And the issue he was aiming to draw attention to, the failure of successive Kapiti councils to make adequate water storage provision while granting ever more development permits for new housing, is one of genuine local concern. It always seems to slip off the Council's agenda somehow. Don't think it will be able to do that any more!

  • Isabel Hitchings,

No luck on the jeans front

To my great surprise I recently found a pretty decent pair of jeans in Farmers.

I find a lot of jeans have their narrowest point right on the widest bit of my hips which fails to be either comfortable or flattering.

Uh. no. The point of the hoodie campaign is that not everyone who wears one is a potential criminal (and statistically speaking, this is certainly true -- especially for those who wear the hoodies Ron Mark sells). Whereas, by any reasonable standard, anyone who wears a Klan hood for real is a criminal -- it was (and is) an organization whose entire existence was predicated on subjugating African Americans (and other minorities), and routinely tortured and murdered in furtherance of its aims. It is akin to dressing up as a death-camp guard, and then trying to claim you just need to get to know the person in the uniform.

You might argue that gang patches could close to being as intrinsically offensive and intimadatory as a Klan hood (and even that would be stretch) -- but hoodies are a long way short of being gang patches. This is not about liberals lacking a sense of humour -- Evans' prank is ignorant and reprehensible.

  • Islander,

Kia ora! Hey, I wore a hoodie today!
    So did I yesterday.
    And the day before-
and so do I almost every day when the cold time comes around (and sometimes during summer, when the wind's a wee bit brisk.)
And so do most of my whanau from the toddlers to the juveniles to the Great Gran-
the support of Hoodie Day -to look askance at the demonisation of reenagers - is a Really Good Idea but it does fall somewhat flat in a cold weatherzone...

-really different part of the thread: waaay back in the early 1960s, when the old New Brighton pier still existed, there was a small insalubrious amusement arcade - the machines paid out in pennies
(which I think the customers were supposed to recycle through 'what the burler saw' type machines). A schoolmate & I discovered a machine that would disgorge *shillings'worth of booty* if you hit the same trigger each time after inserting tuppence...whoa! we milked that thing for *weeks* (and then the amusement arcade abruptly closed...)

Note for other generations: a shilling was roughly worth $10 then...

What Richard said. He seems to have missed the entire point of the hoodie campaign.

  • Amy Gale,

Where do y'all shop for non-Mom jeans??

    (Disclaimer: not actually jeans)
My leaving-the-house pants are mostly Fin and Plush (mmmm, love you Fin, love you Plush). My not-leaving-the-house ones are mostly American Apparel 'relaxe pants' (I initially assumed it was a typo in one store, but it seems to be the actual name).

  • Nick D'Angelo,

    No, Dale Evans is okay

Er ... the most polite thing I can say then is that he meeds more media training. Because he certainly didn't get any of his messages across. He simply came across as an idiot. And then to remove his Klan hood to reveal 'blackface' .... oh ... my ... gawwwwdddddd!

After watching Close Up I became convinced that there must be something seriously wrong with the water supply in Paraparaumu.

I was so, so embarrassed and disgusted by that. And that African-American professor from the University of Canterbury actually responded politely to it. He's a better man than me.

Why was that douchelord even on television? Meh.

Um, Richard, I think we can all take it as read that the KKK is a repulsive organisation and the ideology it espouses is unlikely to find a receptive hearing around here. But I'd really like to know what your "reasonable standard" is. Being a racist fucktard whose idea of haute couture is to ruin a perfectly good bedsheet does not, ipso facto, make you a criminal. Kidnapping, murder and torture is, So is trespassing on other people's property so you can adorn their front lawn with a fire hazzard.

Just as buying into the sartorial codes of a subculture I find fundamentally contemptible does not, ipso facto, make you a P-dealing drive-by shooter.
