  • Southerly: I Fell Down,

It is just so lovely to hear from you, David in Dunsandel. It seems to me that with everything that has been happening for you and your family, writing blog posts would quietly disappear off the bottom of the list and wait in the shadows. But still nice to know you're out there on the plains and for you, and Russell, to know that this PA community creates bonds among strangers that somehow makes us feel like friends.

  • Up Front: Stand for... Something, in reply to Hilary Stace,

You may be right - it may have been Merv Wellington who was the Education Minister.

  • Up Front: Stand for... Something, in reply to Emma Hart,

Many years ago, in the late 70s and early 80s, I was teaching at a tiny school in an alpine village, and one day a flag pole was delivered to the school. I think Lockwood Smith was the Education Minister at the time. Our flagpole lay on the ground outside the only classroom for some time until one day the rubbish truck backed over it and knocked the top off! There was much hilarity amongst the rubbish collectors who did the job as part of their national park duties. And that was pretty much the end of the saga.

  • Speaker: Why you should vote, in reply to Carol Stewart,

Thank you for the link to the infographic from The Guardian, Carol. I was discussing the right of women to vote with my class today and will share this with them tomorrow.

  • Hard News: Unscripted Drama,

Many years ago when we lived and worked in Mount Cook Village, we would travel to and from Christchurch and, whenever cricket was on, we would listen on a crackly car radio in our VW beetle as we drove across the Canterbury Plains. And I was introduced to the magic of cricket and remember my partner saying one of the things he loved about cricket was that a single ball could change the game. As we got closer to the foothills, the reception would fade permanently and we would know no more until the paper arrived in the village the next day. These days we mostly follow cricinfo.
I've enjoyed reading this thread and, like others have mentioned, we've hung in with the Black Caps and this season it's been well worth it. One day I might get organised to go and watch.

  • Hard News: And so it begins, in reply to Russell Brown,

Since national standards were introduced, John Hartevelt has written at least one comprehensive article about their implementation. I remember thinking at the time it was a reasonably balanced piece that covered some of the misgivings I have. Whether I would think the same today if I reread it I don't know. I'll put that to the test some time soon. But I'm wondering if he may be thinking of showing up some of the inconsistencies of the data that the Ministry has received to date.
