I agree that Bill Ralston can write. I disapproved of him when he ran TVNZ News but find myself enjoying his columns and articles. He's a natural and I'm so glad the Listener has him and Linley (?) Boniface. I'm still seething about the Black page I'm afraid but I think the rest of the Listener is pretty damn good.

I love Sara's analyses. Seeing both sides is a beautiful thing.

And I dimly realise how the law operates and police wanted to gather evidence etc But yesterday police stopped a bunch of school-kids who wanted to cause mayhem on their last day at school.

If police had acted in a similar way with the Rama group, this national scandal might have been nipped in the bud.

My son wants to move back to NZ as a better place to be than London but his British fiance might look askance at NZ now!

And what about John Key going to Ruatoki AFTER the police heard about the threat? Doesn't that put the silly eejits' talk in a different light.

  • "The Terrorism Files",

Just back - new things teasing my mind - Breakfast today - Paul Henry this am laughing at Marc Ellis's smoke bombs on Rangitoto Island. "I think it's a clever idea" - because it was fertiliser - and his blonde co-host said "yes, I agree with you" (Pippa Wetzel always agrees with him too - how CAN they?)

As Libby Hakaraia pointed out on nat rad if Tame Iti had let off a smoke bomb on Rangi and scared Aucklanders to promote his cause, he would have been demonised.

My distaste at Henry's humour was environmental - I love that island - what sacrilege - but heck, Libby has a point. We do have two NZs

Irena Asher's family were searched by the terror raid police probably because a member of the family had spent time in Ruatoki.

"Tame Iti has done good work in helping us heal ... He has helped our whanau since the loss of our daughter. He's a good guy. That's the other part - Middle New Zealand are quick to point and judge him and they don't even know the real guy."

Are we Middle New Zealand? The snippets we have seen are out of context. On the other hand, guns WERE fired ... I feel kind of disappointed that this discussion - parts I have had time to read - is a tad one sided.

Please don't shoot me down in flames - I'm only a sheila and I am struggling to be fair minded.

This is from Scoop - Minto's group. Y'all have probably seen it and I'm behind the play. I'm playing Devil's Advocate now or summat but there is a point here, eh?

"It is a despicable police tactic when the material has not even been sighted by those arrested or their lawyers and where the activists themselves will have to wait up to 18 months before having the chance to present their side of the story when the police evidence is tested in court."

    Has Pita Sharples spoken yet?

What do others think of Shane Jones' analysis quoted above?

Is he saying that Tame Iti is just a crim with no sincerely held ideology?

sure a tap on the shoulder and take away any weapons - talk like this shud have licence & firearms revoked.

But it is becoming clear the raid on Ruatoki was OTT.

    that's wot i think

How serious will the firearms trials be for the suspects? Can this discussion harm their chances?

How do you all see the dignified and sensible utterances of Tame Iti's partner and son in the light of what has been revealed?

His son said what hurt the most was his father being called a terrorist. He seemed to be a lovely young fellow to me.

Iti himself said on Close-up that he would never hurt anyone. His partner said Iti was a gentle man (aka teddy bear)

And thanks for the link to the Tuhoe article - I'd read it before but it was good to read it again!

Sorry I mean I don't understand why they watched and waited so long.

What do you think the underlying issues are? Confused and crazy and violent and shocking as it all is, there is a festering issue there. This must be something to do with Tuhoe's valid sense of injustice about land loss which has somehow been distorted into this dangerous nonsense.

And BTW, isn't Vincent Ward making a film about Tuhoe right now? It's in post-production I believe.

And I STILL don't understand why police didn't watch and wait and talk to Maori elders and police reps in the area before spying on these nutters for so long.
