  • Field Theory: He's the voice,

I guess I'm in the "cringe with revulsion" camp.

I can't begin to tell you how many people I know all heartily complain about the plethora of car racing on TV One and TV3 these days. ( one mate calls it Car Porn )

Time was, on a cold rainy saturday or sunday you could always turn on the telly and watch a good movie in the afternoon.
Nowadays all there is is motor racing. BOOR - RING !

I heard a guy once on some sports talkback program bemoaning the amount of car racing and asking why other sports weren't covered - he was followed by someone from motor racing NZ ( or something) who said " well if you want to pay as much as we do for coverage then you can have equal air time " .
Is that how it works ?
If that IS how it works, then isn't it just a big advertising spot for the motor racing industry ( and thus for car, tyre , auto accessory and oil Companies ) ?
Not insinuating anything , i'm just saying.

  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

ralston in his early days was pretty compelling, but that was before he was raking in the big bikkies , now he's gone soft and flabby and , like many journos, he's gone to the dark side now he's a big earner.
I dunno how many times I've seen it here in NZ .... journo starts out hungry, keen to take on the big boys, not afraid to speak out, then...the dosh starts to roll in, they attend a few too many cocktail parties with the hoi polloi and whan bam, suddenly they're one of THEM

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

    " you know what ?"
I KNOW ..not a word, but another Americanism slipping in, listen to americans use it to precede a reply( "no i DON'T know what ! thats why i'm bloody well asking you ! " ) , like the odious "like".... it'll be here soon enough - going forward.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

The more the party tells us how ''silly'' or ''stupid'' we are to ever consider supporting McCain, the more we become convinced of how we are not silly or stupid.

Yes, rather like the people i've seen quoted in the media who tell us they've voted Labour their whole lives but now they're voting National -
usually working people featured in a story about rising power or fuel prices, they seem to have not heard about 'turkeys voting for an early xmas'

Tim tim tim..what happened to ya mate ?
Feeling a strong urge to email Tim and express my dismay at his defection to the Dark Side I googled him and ended up at this page :

  • Hard News: No end of mileage,

I have no idea what its like in other centres, but I did speak to a Cop from Petone one night when we dialled 111 after hearing alarming screaming coming from a gathering of boy racers ( my neighbours are all for Flybuys attached to calls to the Police, we make them so often ) - and he was appalled at the lack of response we were getting from Police down here. A typical call : "hello i'd like to report 200 boy racers have blocked off Road , they have poured deisel across the road , a hedge has been set alight ..." Police : " we're quite busy tonight, we'll see if we can get a car out there , there are boy racers causing problems all over the city".
having said that, Police I have spoken to here tell me that its too dangerous to send in one or two patrol cars and they often have THEIR cars attacked , I was shown a patrol car that had had its rear window smashed three times by boy racers hurling bottles. If I were a cop i'd be reluctant to head into a situation where I was surrounded by 400-500 of these idiots.
Yes, its a certain kind of loutishness.. " we're just having fun and F** the rest of you "

  • Hard News: No end of mileage,

I live in one of a few areas in chch, in which, every weekend ( in our case, every weekend for the past FOUR years ) we have been kept awake, suffered property damage ( stones through windows arson, "tagging " ,letterboxes smashed every weekend etc etc etc ) theft, and assaults ( one on a 74 year old who refused to let a group of Boy racers into her home at 1 am to use her phone, one on a local woman who tried to take a photo of an offending car ) - all from "boy racers". As regular as clockwork, every friday and saturday night, hundreds of these MORONS arrive in our area..bottles smashing onto the roads from speeding cars. The cars are so loud you can hear their stupid convoys coming from about 3 km away. There is no sleeping through the racket they make. Speeds they reach are horrendous. The damage they do is appalling. Locals attempting to pass through their gatherings have had their cars attacked with bottles and rocks and have been followed home by groups of 'boy racers' and harrassed. This behaviour usually carries on until 2 in the morning. Unless you live with this problem you have NO idea of how bad this problem is - these people are not benign ,they are moronic thugs on wheels . As my neighbours often say " we'd rather live next door to a gang than put up with these little shits ".
