Fake news. This has been the year of fake news, and it will be fake news if fake news doesn't win.

Write me a one-pager and I'll get it into NZOn Air. I think we're onto a winner.

Paddy would make an outstanding presenter for this show. "Do you have the support to survive another night at #37? Are you concerned John Tamihere will shank you for your spot?"

To technically minded viewers, that analogy sounded risible. It might as well have been written in Comic Sans.

Kia ora, Russell. This is the single wisest thing I have read about the interview.

John Key is Comic Sans, asshole.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to Stephen Judd,

Watch out lest it you end up using it in everything and getting sick of it.

    This describes my situation accurately.

Another pork-hack: pig heads. Your local butcher probably has them -- they use them to make sausages and such like but will generally part with one for $10-15. Your local PaknSave or New World probably even has them -- these places usually still do their own butchery (unlike Countdown, who truck in shrinkwrapped meat from distribution centres). My Pak sells a head, split in half, for $5. Sometimes you have to ask.

These have a stupid amount of meat on them. The jowls on a big head each comprise about 1kg, of rich, deeply marbled and striated meat that behaves much like belly. You can also cure it for bacon or what not, or just roast the head whole for a thorough expression of carnivorous badassery. I fed four adults and two children off one last night, and it was GOOD.

There is a bit of knifework, but this is all well-documented on the internet, and basically "get rid of anything that doesn't look like meat" will see you right. Or a butcher will probably do it for you.

Then you throw the rest of the head into your biggest pot and make stock, and all is right in the world.

  • Hard News: The Righteous Humour, in reply to Russell Brown,

[David] Well, Nate Silver has described himself as basically a libertarian/ Mitt Romney kind of guy personally (though choosing not to vote because of his profession), it is just he is primary a quantitative analysis kind of guy

[Russell] And yet I’ve seen him characterised as a “liberal commentator” more than once. That’s what being reality-based gets ya.

Silver started doing election analysis on Daily Kos under a pseudonym, and was an admitted supporter of Obama in 2008. (Canonical reference for this is his 2008 FAQ, from before the NYT bought him). Once he ‘came out’, so to speak, or went mainstream, he became less partisan, but still gets tarred with the “liberal shill” brush.

None of which changes the fact that he’s right. A week or two before the election some GOP surrogate on twitter said something like like “Come 2016 we will have a conservative Nate Silver, mark my words” to which Silver replied something like “If the GOP candidate is leading the swing states going into 2016, that conservative Nate Silver will be me”.

  • OnPoint: H4x0rs and You, in reply to Caleb D'Anvers,

There is no way in hell I would think that something 500 words long written in 90 minutes was in any way ready for publication. You can’t provide any form of analysis or contextualizing in 500 words. And you can’t expect to say anything accurate or informed with those time constraints, either.

According to physicists, bumblebees can't fly. And yet every day, oblivious to the theoretical laws under which they are impossible, millions of them get about and do just that.

And thank goodness they do, because if they didn't, we wouldn't have any tomatoes. Maybe not always perfect organic vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes, but the tomatoes we have are better than no tomatoes.
