  • Daily Show on NZ Satire Ban,

I just watched this episode and came here to see if anyone had posted it...damned funny :)

Someone needs to show this to Parliament to highlight that everyone thinks this is ludicrous.

That Fox clip was magnificent because no one laughed and said 'just kidding!' I don't know how they do that...

  • Hard News: Bad journalism, old stories,

I'm sympathetic to the 'mercury mums'. I've met lots of parents of ASD kids while researching here and they are all, in general, lovely people desperate to know what happened to their child. They just want something to blame, and MMR etc was a convenient scapegoat.

But that's the kicker - this sort of story distorts the picture and misrepresents what science actually has to say. It's partly our own fault - scientists aren't good with the media and that's a failing. But these sensational stories do nothing but sell newspapers to worried parents who mean well for their children.

Baron-Cohen may be big into theory of mind but in general he's done a lot of good work in autism. It's a shame his name's getting recruited by this bandwagon.

  • Hard News: TVNZ on Demand actually…,

Well I just opened yesterday's 6pm news on my laptop in Aberdeen so I'm happy - I can't see me paying for Shortland St but being able to catch the news and various local offerings should make this pretty cool. And the video really isn't bad at all at full screen. Not a bad effort at all, and I'm pleased to hear us ex-pats aren't being left behind. I was worried I wouldn't be able to see anything.

  • Hard News: Appeasing Osama,

Honestly, just watch the Colbert interview where he destroys the man's soul just by staring at it. It was painful to watch Colbert decide he'd had enough and it was time to take the gloves off.

I'm so amused by the argument posed in this book that I just can't take it seriously.

  • Hard News: Munted in one way or another,

How did 'numpty' get onto the word list? I got accused of being one here in Scotland and was so confused I nearly forgot to ask what it was I'd just been called.

And don't let the internet know 'truthiness' is there - Colbert fans got a bridge in Hungary and a Canadian ice hockey mascot named after him on web polls :)

  • Hard News: Walk the Line,

As a psychologist I'd like to mention that people in general are shocking at estimating time. The human body has no internal clock that tells you anything about the invented measure 'seconds'. I read that sentence and was astounded anyone thought this was a legitimate test.

If there's one thing I hate more than the 'no science' approach its the 'bad science' approach.
