dave, Russell linked to the story in his first paragraph, which outlined what the teenager had done also.
Please don't tell me you think the teenager deserved this violent treatment from his parent and guardian. That would be an obscene implication.
I would suggest that having such violent parents is exactly how the teenager learned to use violence himself. It came from somewhere: his loving role models.

I think the chance of murder is WAY sadder. Especially for the family who must be waking up to the realisation that his death was truly untimely. Surely a natural death is easier (!) to come to terms with.
Exactly so sad about Pakistan / England relationships & potential damage here.
It was only recently that Imran Khan spoke out to say that wins or losses on the day are up to Inzamam-ul-Haq - NOT the coach.

At 29 you'd think Flintoff would've grown up his ideas a bit.I think our Louie will get his batting form back when he's up against a team that fires him up (read: Aussies). He just doesn't have enough hate or passion to strike hard against the Kenyans. But I have faith he'll come through where it's required.
What a sad development re Bob Woolmer today. :o(

which organizations that have a genuine interest in children's wellbeing are actually opposed?
Light years ago in this debate (like, a couple of weeks) i'm sure i heard Christine Rankin speak out on National Radio strongly against the bill amendment.
I just googled & she would have been representing Light One Life http://www.lightonelife.org.nz/know-more.php, which concerns child welfare.
The web site is just one page that I can tell, & does not say one specific thing about how this organisation proposes to "establish a movement of change", or what that change would be about.
You have to presume from the web site that they do want to prevent child abuse and neglect - but they don't actually say that, or how.
But I'm pretty sure she was against the amendment.
Go figure.

Right... his book "Choke" would also be entirely relevant in this context and is a great read as well.
"Time Out" just isn't kinky. Although those given the more old fashioned, claustraphobic "time out" (such as the cupboard under the stairs) could well become the type in adult life that you'd accidentally stumble across frotting a mop in the cleaning cupboard.
This could partly explain why B&D venues are invariably set up like dungeons and basements...

English former public schoolboys I've met have had fetishes beyond corporal punishment-b&d-type (not, I repeat not, that I helped them out on this front) that could theoretically have been sparked through their odd school caning, for example.
These are gentlemen who like to be piddled on.
So what on earth can we find to explain this??
