  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Farmer Green,

    Can’t think of anything else.

    What matters is the hidden agenda. Point is, we had an early election called because our economic situation was deteriorating by the month - then by the week - and soon it will be by the day. National didn't want to make any proposals to increase the tax take because they want to be in charge when austerity measures are called for.

    We still have valuable assets - Landcorp and the Conservation estate.

    Yes, the drop was worse – much worse – for Labour than for National (from 19.6% to 16.0%), and also dropped for the Greens(from 7.9% to 6.5%) but I don’t want to see this reported as a surge in support for National, because it’s not.

    Exactly. And it was a surge for NZF and for Conservatives - which might as well have been a surge for NZF policies (which are national populism/anti-globalism) - but a resounding rejection of neoliberalism (ACT policy).

    As I see it, globalism is the 2G of neoliberalism - you have centre left and centre right globalists - and the competing ideologies. NZF is a competing ideology.

    If interested, here's a great academic paper on Ideologies of Globalization;

    I’m all for Winston being made Speaker of the House ; he knows where the door is. And it might shut him up , to some extent.

    Yes, and I'm sure Key will try that one on - with the promise of a knighthood to boot. I don't think he'll take it but I do think he'd love to be the Minister of Racing again. Possible double-cross coming up here :-).

    There will be the odd commentator that will spout the usual ‘don’t ever write Winston off’

    Point is, unless he performs in opposition on this issue (and thankfully Ron Mark got back in with his Parliamentary experience as well) then we might as well write democracy off. That was pretty much what Dame Beverley expressed the other day as well. So, Dirty Politics must be sorted. And it will be.

    That doesn’t sound like the Tariana Turia that I know. Too much testosterone in the new leadership?

    Willie Jackson discussed in on Marae this morning.

    his brand has attracted too much vitriol from the powers-that-be to make that happen.

    No, the only powers-that-be that matter are the judiciary. And the judiciary is no fan of this government (and not just on the Dotcom issues). Read, for example, the judgement associated with the challenge associated with denying prisoners the right to a vote.

    The opposition has a lot of ammo, if aimed correctly, who knows.

    Indeed. And they also have the three Offices of Parliament and the privileges committee. WP is the most constitutionally informed. He needs to be given the reigns to lead this for the whole of the opposition.

    I’m hopeful that Hone will get over his lover’s quarrel with the Maori Party ; are they really so far apart?

    I understood he approached them before the election got underway and tried to get them to work together to keep the independent Maori voice in the Maori electorates strong. They refused. And that independence was (largely) lost to Maori.

    Bit early to be making that call, perhaps? Internet seemed to have some good ideas and some talent, but perhaps need to reorganise without Dotcom. Mana seems a bit more solid, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that what happened in Te Tai Tokerau was the Establishment ganging up to get rid of the upstart Little People. But perhaps if Mana could go underground and rebuild for the next 3 years, they might have a base from which to stage a comeback next time?

    I'm hoping against hope they stay Internet Mana. Laila and Hone are great together as is evidence so brilliantly in this Herald interview;

    And I'm also hoping that Dotcom's legal team keep him in NZ and he stays with IMP in that visionary role. We have an internet-age Einstein on our shores here. I hope we can benefit from him building one tech company after another, based in NZ and wildly successful worldwide.

    And I make no apology for caring about all of that. It concerns me, deeply.

    Winston Peters is going to make bringing those responsible for Dirty Politics to account as his legacy, I believe. As he said in one interview - why would Key call him .. unless, that is, he wanted to silence him. And he then stated he wouldn't sell out anyway.

    He's a man on a mission - no one more up to it, either. He'll get his man :-)!
