• Hard News: On Ideas,

outsourcing to the private sector...
aah! The Quigley effect!

Can some one remind me how many times privatising or outsourcing to private consultants has saved money and helped "move things forward" productively...

This approach to improving productivity is kind of up there with Bob Parker and Tony Marryatt - rulers of Christchurch - taking a fact finding tour to four cities vastly bigger and different to Chch - Vancouver, Portland, Seattle & San Francisco - nice work if you can get it (and someone else pays for it!)

...and could some one buy the Parliamentary Library a subscription to Private Eye a great source of tales of the ongoing folly of privatising or private/public partnerships.

Moreu has a good take on it today...

• Island Life: The Prime Minister Has Spoken,

Corporate parasites don't help either...
As we export our savings and banking business to all the Aussie entities, wouldn't it be grand to see those Corporate Bodies paying their way, and weight, insofar as tax goes.
The sooner I can pull my business from the amoral BNZ the better - what tossers and definitely not team players.
Nice that they could pay the fine from current profirts with no problem - but they think they'll probably appeal because there is so much money involved - duh! - greed as a reflex action, charming...

ISBN - I Suffer Bloody Needles...?

David Haywood has suggested I get the ISBN of my forthcoming book tattooed somewhere on my body. It's a bloody tempting thought.

I suggest tatting the number on your spine...

Nothing wrong with being a full paid up member of the Pendant Society though!
- Shouldn't that be "fully paid up"?

Ah, Giovanni, you have fallen into Deborah's
cleverly worded confabulation - such are the
skills of an artful and cunning linguist...

The sentence is a latent matrix of sexual allusions to
blown away and its other various meanings and possible substitutes, all with tongue firmly in cheek...

When one examines the scalar possibilities of seemingly innocent words like full the alluded to Thesaurus presents Engorged, Replete, Satiated, Bursting, Stuffed and many more, including Well Endowed and Glutted!
While *paid up** may seem to infer a simple cash
transaction it is also a reference to subscribed capital
and Capital is the top of a column, or Head!
But wait there's more, paid up is also diap as in diaper in which members can be wrapped...
and pendant well, er, hung!
I rest my case...
or it could just be a personal problem ;-)
Or some thing like that...

Huff n puff and other short pantalunacy...
Those netballers are being shortchanged by that joyless Ms Walden, the Manawatu admonishtraitor!

I have never understood why female sports people seem to be required to wear the minimum of (often impractical) clothing ... is it just "marketing" and assisted objectification?

- same with schools it always seemed unfair that even in the depths of winter girls had to wear skirts with bare legs (though I believe tights may be allowed these days) and us boys could wear trousers, long johns, etc...

Whatever happened to freedom of choice, weren't a coupla wars fought for that? (and not in short skirts either! - well the Greeks & Romans maybe - but they were fighting for the, er, Hempire!)

• Hard News: Swine flu and swearing,

After Bathing at Baxters...

Our government has ordered 300,000 doses of an experimental swine flu vaccine from an American company. The vaccine will arrive within a month, but, barring emergency, won't be approved for use until around December.

That'd be the same Baxter International that earlier
this year sent out live avian flu virus mixed with
vaccine material would it...?

Deerfield, Illinois-based pharmaceutical company Baxter International Inc. has just been caught shipping live avian flu viruses mixed with vaccine material to medical distributors in 18 countries.

Talk about drumming up business...

• Hard News: Drugs and Sex,

Bondi Beach Bromides...

Another advantage of Gee's Linctus (the morphine cough preparation) is that it is sweetened with honey, and it tastes delicious.

An abiding memory from Toy Love's Australian sojourn -
Setting up in The Astra Hotel, above the beach at Bondi, (I think it might be an old people's home now) ... laying out cable, and behind all the cigarette machines, jukeboxes and amusement devices along one wall it was ankle deep in empty cough medicine bottles, Gee's , Phensedyl and others, mostly still in their chemist's brown paper bags... Not much coughing in the audience though!

Ferro Moans from the Olfactory Wall...
To add to something raised earlier - possibly in another thread - about carpet in pubs - I have another hardwired memory - that silent yet noisome emission from excited photons hitting Nicotine & C2 H5 OH (alcohol) soaked floorcoverings - even thinking about it still triggers a serious peristaltic gag response - up there with the malodorous emanations from those jars full of water and alcohol and cigarette butts that pubs thought were a great idea... my amygdala* shudders...
