  • Speaker: The Freeviewer Diaries (1),

It doesn't strip out HDMI or any other form of encryption, it just doesn't add it. The signal is broadcast unencrypted, but to get Freeview certification the receiver has to prevent copies being made. If that label isn't required then there is a little less software development required for the device.

There has been quite a bit of discussion in forums such as geekzone about trying to get full use of the hardware, eg the Zinwell box has ethernet and USB ports that can't be used. Some users are doing things like installing alternative firmware to gain extra features.

The people who are investigating such things have noticed that some of these boxes are running Linux and other GPL software, and breaching copyright by not distributing the source code. The distributors of these devices don't seem to be making any effort to stop breaking the law.

  • Hard News: What to Do?,

The question makes no sense and needs to be mentally rewritten before it can be answered. I think I'll act as if it says "Should it be a crime to punch a four year old in the face or repeatedly hit a seven year old with a soup ladle?"

Has no one thought this through? I mean if there is cycleway/footpath over the bridge think of all the criminals cycling down from the North Shore.

That was great. I've wanted to cycle over that bridge for such a long time. Now if only it were something we could do just as easily as driving over.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

This leads to the odd sight of middle-aged ladies physically leashed to their machines.

Are the cords still red? The image gets odder still if it makes you think of dialysis.

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

I imagine the person who did that would be sued into bankruptcy if they were not actually the copyright holder, or perhaps prosecuted. In fact I believe part of the advice given to the minister is that the remedy for anyone wrongly accused was to use the fraud provisions in the Crimes Act.

That could be difficult if the accusation came from overseas.

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

RB's gravatar was still normal until moments ago even from a machine which has never seen it before. So yeah, cached somewhere other than locally.

I guess I should go make a gravatar too.

  • Hard News: The Big Day Out, Auckland, 2009,

The Headless Chickens were great, the highlight of the BDO for me. We should have stayed around for more of Neil Young rather than going to see Fantomas though.

My wife liked Bullet for my Valentine and Arctic Monkeys, which I though a little odd because usually our musical tasts mathc a bit better than that. I guess they were OK
