  • Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to vangam,

How exactly does one die in custody from alcohol/drug abuse?

By a lack of care by the custodians. Ie you are locked up without your present condition not being noted and monitored. So bad, but obviously a regualr occurence.

These riots seem so similar to ones started in Brixton so many years ago. I was living on Clapham then, and naturally it spread there. As all have said above the exhilaration especially after months of Red Squad intimidation was overwhelming. I remember we joked, yes joked, about there being no electrical plugs in stock all over London. (Appliances were sold without plugs in them days).
Britian was in a similar poor economic state, and the weather was very hot and humid then too, a combination that is explosive for those with no control over either.

  • Hard News: Some Lines for Labour,

well if Labour and the Greens were serious about being in Govt and trying to show what a shallow show pony Mr Key is, they should be making the BBC Hardtalk interview available everywhere and referring to it constantly. Not only did he look and sound pompous and ignorant it also shows what happens when he doesn't select his usual fawning media. That interview is frankly embarrassing and just as Lange's nuclear speech defines him, so should this define Kay as he is at this time.

  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party,

well we are having a wee party with fish n chips, eaton mess and pimms and I am really really excited about it all . Watching it live via UKTV (naturally) and commenting on frocks, jocks and shocks is perfect for a Friday nights entertainement.
I am not a royalist but love a party, and watching mad Englishmen (and women) out in the midday sun really promises to be one of the better TV reality shows on this year.
A perfect distraction after all the yellow peril this week

  • Field Theory: Hospital Pass,

Well first off - I am not a rugby fan, I may even be slightly to the negative side of the bar, and that is nothing to do with the game itself but all the brouhaha that follows it everywhere.

Talking with several friends including some overseas who are planning to come to NZ for the World Cup it is obvious overseas people and a lot of their friends DON'T WANT to be in Christchurch - they want to watch first class rugby - the earthquake has decided it is not Christchurch for them. They are spending a lot planning, time and money to come here and want to see tremor free rugby full stop. That may sound harsh but they are the 'the clients' and if they don't want to go there then why force it. I would rather they come and watch the Cup anywhere in NZ rather than not come at all. We will all benefit from this, according to previous World Cup media statements. and I would hate to see an anti-Auckland argument develop because this is not what it is about. It is about having fantastic games with fantastic crowds and possible a fantastic NZ win.
Imagine if at the last moments of a game a winning penalty/conversion was put off course by a minor aftershock.

  • Hard News: The First Draft,

And the story about Shane Tomlin and his family in |Stuff today worries me.
His photo was everywhere but the family didn't know until they were advised by others. They didn't know his injuries. They still seem to be in shock. I get quite upset seeing interviews with people obviously still in shock. How will they feel when they are more aware of what was going on? Do/will they want to be reminded by interviews, text and photos of what happened to them and theirs and to relive the moment for ever and a day.

  • Hard News: A very roundabout review of…,

    Hi Russell
thanks for the acknowledgment but really it was all a big group effort with your family also helping with Notschool. Leo's qualifications are standard UK quals and equivalent to 1/2 a GCSE each - so it was a truly fantastic effort from him.
Anyone wanting to learn about Notschool can here or emailing me at jeanh@notschool.net.
I feel I should say Notschool is not supported here in New Zealand and I doubt it will ever be, but I am happy to help any other home schooling people with ideas or pointers.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

roll over Nanny state - here is Daddy state

big Daddy and his friends know best

I have often thought of this govt as the National equivalent to the David Lange led Labour one. John Key's, arrogance and ambition is being most deftly used by those ultra right wing diehards in his govt to be the acceptable, though facile face of an incredibly conservative social and and political agenda. There also seems to be a childish eagerness to renounce all things agreed to by the previous Labour led govt.

  • Hard News: The Social Retail,

well - I support an online Wine company - Advintage - as a good provider of some good deals on wine that is not usually available in the supermarket. Also living in Mangere - well the local liquor stores are just that, liquor stores and drinkable wine isn't really an option, so Foodtown it is for the quaffing stuff. The nearest local would be Don Johnson's place in Royal Oak, and again a good retailer making lots of effort. Wine shops are the same as private bookshops, meat shops, delis, they provide the choice and range not usually available in the chain shops.
Long may they prosper and long may I be financially able to contribute to this.
