  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Nah, it’s all of a piece with his campaign.
Live by the bullshit, die by the bullshit.
(Generously assuming that this too is bullshit,
and not an honest expression of his belief.)
The past few months seem to have demonstrated that bullshit, utterly unconstrained by reality, can't be beaten by “fair and square”: the best you can hope for is that it defeats itself. That’s bloody depressing.

  • Up Front: Wonder Bi, in reply to BenWilson,

Probably a subset of the old favourite “all people who even think about wanting to have sex must die” (see: any teen horror movie).

  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs,

    Mae West noted

Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.

It's hard to look at the US election and not think they're taking that advice seriously.

  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs, in reply to Alfie,

Having had the Democrats choose a Republican-lite candidate,
    the Republicans don’t need to take the election seriously;
    so, send in the clown…

More seriously, what we’re seeing is that many voters don’t trust the system, and so anyone who appears to be outside the system can gain support. Except there are very good reasons Trump is a Washington outsider: e.g. he doesn’t play well with others; and he knows nothing about politics and likes it that way. Whereas … being a lying racist misogynistic moneygrubbing sack of shit doesn’t make him that much of an outlier in the Republican circus.

The event is positioned as a celebration.

True enough; but I think Grant's point stands about the difference between the live event vs. what it looks like on TV. (Difficult for the presenter to tread a middle ground, though.)

    - should be ‘hear’.

Or 'had heard' (more common error, resulting from ambiguous 'd being wrongly expanded).

  • Speaker: Confessions of an Uber Driver…,

One point that leapt out in that NZH article, which really should give prospective Uber drivers pause for thought:

because the drivers work as self-employed contractors, they would individually be responsible for paying fines, not the company.

  • Speaker: Confessions of an Uber Driver…,

It’s possible Uber don’t actually have a fixed criterion score as such for each area, but rather a fixed number of drivers to be kept in active service, with drivers ranked below that number dumped each month, regardless of absolute average rating – so it’s a churn mechanism for their pyramid scheme of sign-ups.

  • Hard News: The Dr G giveaway, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Even cheaper would be to read Ben’s column archive at badscience.net
(which contains drafts and extracts from the first book, and also forms the bulk of the third book, which is basically a retrospective).
Similarly, there’s enough of Ben’s talks online now that a speech would have to contain something spectacularly new to justify that ticket price.

One thing to spend money on, when it eventuates, is his long-planned fourth book, on trialling social policy.

(N.B. I have bought the first three books.)
