  • Hard News: Still sounds good, in reply to Russell Brown,

I was up the back Russell. Spotted you in passing... back of your head, later on, was busy catching up with so many ex-Dunedin people... good times.

So you've heard what Andre captured? Hope it comes out, his Fits recordings from Sammy's back in 05, and the Verlaines live that same night I think it was... excellent.

  • Hard News: Still sounds good, in reply to Neil H,

How I’d love to come to NZ and see these gigs. So, if you feel inclined to offer the free tickets to me, all I have to do is to work out how I’m going to get there! Failing that, somebody, please record them…

Lucky you, and everyone who missed this show, then: Radio NZ's Andre Upston was at that Auckland show and recorded it for broadcast, I imagine it'll be archived online for at least a short time... I caught Shayno on Saturday at the KA and didn't disagree when one of my English immigrant football team-mates declared him (in an excellently stunned fashion) "a genius". On ya SPC.

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies,

Not telling anyone how to be offended or not... offence is a personal act, or should be.

Good to hear some perspectives on why it was offensive. The media thing seemed like a beat-up to me.

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies, in reply to Danyl Mclauchlan,

In general, if a group in society has a history of being persecuted and demonised – like gay people – you need to be really careful about the way you criticise them, or even if criticism is justified, lest you be seen, rightly or wrongly as perpetuating the persecution.

Thanks for that - but honestly, is that it? Makes it sound like gays are some sort of endangered species then... whereas in my experience, friends and family who just happen to be gay, also happen to be pretty tough nuts. Maybe that's because of past persecution and society, or even present - but surely merely mentioning a subset of society is hardly offensive? And, ditto unionists.

Oddly, a quick search reveals that Kiwiblog also deemed O'Connor's comments offensive to his colleagues.

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies,

Did I miss the whole "Damien O'Connor is a bigot" thread? Sorry if so but he didn't actually say anything offensive to my mind, unless the words "gays" and "unionists" lumped together are somehow too rude to be said out loud... I just do not get why anyone got at all jumpy about this.

Some journo ran the numbers of out gays/unionists/husbands or wives on the Labour list in an article I read somewhere, and O'Connor did look inaccurate.

And obviously it was not helpful to his party, who I could care less about (ditto the Nats) but why was his statement offensive? I mean, really?

Not trying to be a troll here, mkay? Just a tad bewildered by it all... Incorrect, fair call. Offensive? Not.

  • Hard News: Time to get a grip, in reply to Peter Calder,

Her remarks about Goff, though not inaccurate, were petty and redundant

Wow, Jude made a point? I interviewed her once for a music feature around funding issues and despite chewing my ear off for half an hour or more, there wasn't one grab worth using...

Um, Scotland v Georgia? England v Romania? etc... not exactly quarter-final material... 30,000 should be plenty for those games...

And if you do get an Android at least you can turn the internet on and off. Who wants to constantly broadcast your GPS location? Cell phone towers are near enough for comfort.

Look I'm a South Islander but it's a simple logistical exercise. Not enough accomodation in Dunedin or anywhere else + NZRU/government have a chance to make less of a loss with increased ticket sales.

Great timing for the government, this earthquake... watch the reporting on it get totally buried under the Christchurch news (no pun intended)
