  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

Just because Red Peak is better than the panel options doesn't make it a good or even a very well considered choice. That bar was pretty low. None of the options represent New Zealand to me or make a convincing attempt to carry the combination of European (mainly British) and Maori heritage forward. So I guess this makes no difference to me: I'm all for the status quo until such time as we consider this issue properly, and for a better reason than to prop up a third term government that is running out of steam.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Not just…,

So video killed the radio star and streaming killed the radio revenue model. I know I'm part of a rapidly shrinking demographic, but streaming and, indeed, digital downloads don't really do it for me. I like to own a thing once I've paid for it.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A night out dancing,

Meanwhile, I’m still finding odd bugs – turning on the Beats1 radio station instatly disables AirPlay in iTunes, to the point of making the AirPlay icon disappear from the menu bar, although AirPlay can still be anbled at system level. (If you have been using Home Sharing to access your desktop library from other devices in the home, that’s gone for everyone – except via Apple TV.) Fuck knows, basically.

Pretty sure I read that neither of these things are bugs. Beats1 is not allowed to go via AirPlay by design… Home Sharing is gone for now, but allegedly it will be back like Arnie in iOS9.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A night out dancing,

duplicating and even triplicating some of them

In my experience, that seems to be standard iCould (mis)behaviour with lots of data items. Annoying enough for me to avoid so far.

I’m inclined to think the problem is iCloud

I'm inclined to think you're right. In my experience, iCloud remains a dog's breakfast, with lots of unpredictable and unintuitive behaviours. To be avoided.

  • Hard News: Meet me at Camera 2: White, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

However, for the last sixty years, tucked away on a mesa in New Mexico, UCB has run a lab developing a range of nuclear and non-nuclear means to kill said non-white people.

This may be pedantic, but I think those bombs will kill you regardless of your skin colour. And, regardless of what you think of its origins, and indeed of military research in general, it does need to be pointed out that Los Alamos National Lab does more than just weapons research.

  • Hard News: The epitome of reason, in reply to Barnaby Nicholls,

Miliband was damaged by much out of his control

Maybe so, but he was also damaged by much that was well within his control. The ‘from memory’ keynote speech, the ‘Edstone’… On a visit to the UK last year I was shocked by how underwhelming, how unready for government Miliband and Balls appeared to be, and I think that in those circumstances, the swing votes tend to fall to the incumbents.

  • Hard News: The epitome of reason,

I think a great deal of both Elections was about personality politics.

Without John Key, National have a rather unappealing and probably unelectable front bench. Labour I think have yet to find Key's match, and National may struggle with a leader who elicits less public affection, as baffling as that affection may be to some of us.

In the UK, Milliband and Balls were a comedy act. All Cameron really had to do was keep his nerve and not drop the ball, and in that sense it was 1992 redux. How Cameron will emerge from the corner into which he has now painted himself remains to be seen...

  • Hard News: #GE2015: Proper Mad,

    Russell Brand, influential prat

    Yes, that!

It is actually a hard choice - on my trip back to the UK last year, I found Milliband and Balls to be deeply underwhelming. The British electorate may well vote for the Devils they already know, like they did in 1992. But it really is too close to call, and too chaotic to predict. Even Nate Silver has said it's basically too hard.

The FPTP system in the UK is so clearly in need of overhaul, but it's hard to see that happening. Their overseas voting is in disarray also, it would anecdotally seem... I'm too long gone to still have a vote their, but my more recently arrived mother received her voting papers on Tuesday this week. To be snail-mailed back. I voted with my cellphone from the USA in the NZ election last year, which was pretty impressive. Not that it did any good, mind...

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

What we actually need is a proper public broadcaster. Until then it’s hardly reasonable to demand that a business make bad commercial decisions just because we like the idea of something.

If Campbell Live does go off air I sincerely hope John gets to ply his craft elsewhere, but the problem is that without that public interest broadcaster there isn’t an obviously place to put the show.

    Well yes and yes again.

I think what you're saying is quite true, and as a result I feel that NZ is buggered in this respect.
