  • Hard News: Friday Music: Starting Early,

My family was on the recieving end of media attention after an international tragedy. In general the bigger NZ news agencies were respectful and in some cases incredibly helpful. It was the smaller organisations, or those with less command of the media sphere that were in trusive, camping out on the kerb outside our houses, assuming priveledge and trying to coldcall. The worst were the magazines who were sure someone in the family would want to benefit financially from the tragedy. "It'll be great exposure and our readership are truelly concerned and want to know more..." The same schtick they use to intrude on any private moment.

  • Hard News: The Public Address Word of…,

My favourite this year has been Ubermenshe. Probably not the most populist word for 2013 but still a good one. Followed by Coniption.

They're going to struggle to fit all this under the carpet

They'll put in under the gaudy carpet in the new casino, plenty of space there

Too true. Where were the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and friends of the family. This stuff didnt occur in a vacuum, it occured with a culture.

"She also alleged police asked her what she had been wearing and had said she was wearing clothing "that were pretty much asking for it"...

    Really? Clods.

Now, after four formal complaints, from children, about the same rape gang , they have seen fit to seek a search warrant.

Hopefully the search warrant will enable them to gather some evidence. But by now every digital file has been deleted, bedrooms cleaned and tidied, vacuumed. The piercings have gone, haircuts been had and lawyers consulted.

    Flights to Indonesia boarded.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Miche Campbell,

This is all making me sick to my stomach, and I can't help but get the feeling much worse is going to be uncovered during the investigation.

There is definitely an impending sense of doom here. Whether or not the police have done their jobs properly, it seems that we are all about to learn of the horrors inflicted on a large number of girls. As the father of two girls and the brother of six sisters I really don’t want to know how they suffered. But I'm beginning to think we should all be told of the extent of this atrocity. We need a deep level of moral change for a very large portion of New Zealand's men, including boys, their family and the police.

  • Hard News: Squatting in the Square, in reply to Russell Brown,

The Mutoid Waste Company party I went to in a squatted annex to King's Cross Station in 1988

I envy you that party...I've met a couple of the Mutoid Waste people, and got to stay on their land near Rimini in Italy. One of them is Emma who's been a part of NZ's festival scene and is a fantastic aerialist - hopefully she'll turn up for Splore. The other was Lucy Wisdom, who passed away last year. Lucy was one of the unsung heros of counterculture, she started The Bat Cave in London, was an original Mutoid member, helped make a tank henge when the wall came down and spent her last decade saving and rehabilitating orangutans in Sumatra.
