Nothing summery on this coast these last few days.
Instead, an off-road excursion a few Sundays ago to Whareongaonga –
looking broadly north up the coast, Poverty Bay and Gisborne beyond Young Nicks Head/Te Kuri a Paoa right of centre.Brightening headland, darkening ahead as a shower sweeps in from the sea towards Poverty Bay.

The ‘feral West Coasters’ label has been around since 2000, when former Prime Minister Helen Clark was speaking on National Radio at the height of the native timber logging debate, but her comments were taken out of context.
A transcript of the sentence in question shows that Ms Clark actually said: ‘Attitudes of some on the West Coast could be fairly feral’.Nothing about breeding.
I’m not sure ‘feral’ was in currency as a term of abuse in 2000. She may well have unwittingly relaunched it as such, whereas I think she thought she was using it in a semi-technical sense as fair comment in regard to some West Coasters.Yet Geoffrey Palmer’s ‘pluvial’ in describing NZ as “an irredeemably pluvial country” in the wake of Cyclone Bola never caught on.

Yes – striking, impressive images but I found them disconcerting. And the retention of a fragment of Raetihi’s much-photographed Ratana church as the first banner image on PAS has been a repeating reminder over these several weeks.
Not necessarily a bad thing to be disconcerted by photos, and it took a while to identify why. The memory of difficult hitch-hiking in the vicinity of Waikune prison in the 1970s when it was a going concern? No, more general than that.Then I realised – ‘ki tua o te ārai’ – ‘beyond the veil’ – used in reference to the dead. Disconcerting dissonance with young daughter.
Reinforced this morning by renewal of the PhotoForum at 40
thread - that cover image of the book, titled ‘Shrouds’ [plural].Fine photos. Disconcerting but.
