  • Hard News: Grateful for 'Rain',

Really, Connor, I've got to side with Ben and Don on this. Stick a fork in this property snob crap, 'cause its done.

You might be right Craig, but I think there is a genuine discussion to be had as to why developers feel the need to name things in such convoluted and wankerish ways. Surely we can be a bit more innovative, or indeed indigenous, in our selection of names for bits of road and new sub-divisions.

Our country has a wealth of historical icons, birds or (as you point out) our own New Zealand monikers with which we could name our streets. 'Success Court' just sounds vacuous - which I guess is the same adjective that people seem to be attaching to its now most famous part-time inhabitant; hence the interest.

Forget all the weeds and tacky architecture, didn’t anyone notice from the Herald on Sunday story that Key's bach is on a road called 'Success Court'? Isn’t that an example of 'nuff said'?

And didn’t anyone think to tell Key that he didn’t seem very prime ministerial crapping on about crab pots and sharks this week. Still I guess you could say his random thoughts formed some kind of policy. Which is a start.

  • Hard News: Quite the Two-Step,

I've been watching Huckabee for a while now. He is very interesting.

I think he'll win Iowa, as 40% of the Republican voters are evangelical Christians and he is an ex-preacher. Also the evangelicals know how the somewhat odd Iowa caucus system works…

Huckabee has spent around $9 per vote in Iowa against Romeny's $200 (and before critics of the EFB say 'ha', perhaps you should consider how much worse Romney would be doing if he didn’t just outspend Huckabee).

This is pretty amazing considering how well he is doing there, his is truly a groundswell campaign - but he'll struggle going forward without staff and campaign infrastructure. What is does show is how unsettled the Republican race for the White House is, whilst Giuliani is out front – I don’t think many Republican voters like him much, and his numbers have been sliding.

Heading to liberal New Hampshire and out East, Huckabee will struggle. Especailly since he thinks evolution is a myth. Although if he can at least hang in there until South Carolina, things might get interesting.

Whatever you say about American politics – it’s bloody fascinating.

  • Hard News: Farce About,

Regarding John Key's track, one of my charitable friends suggested he should have had 'Nowhere Man' by the Beatles. Apt lyrics reproduced below:

    He's a real nowhere Man,
    Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
    Making all his nowhere plans
    for nobody.

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
    Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?

    Nowhere Man, don't worry,
    Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
    lends you a hand.

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

    He's a real Nowhere Man,
    Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
    Making all his nowhere plans
    for nobody.
    Making all his nowhere plans
    for nobody.
    Making all his nowhere plans
    for nobody.

    Exactly.

  • Word of the Year 2007,

For most Kiwi's, before 2007, they would have been like Urewherea?

Now, at the end of this year, the word everyone knows about is Urewera.

  • Hard News: Invisible Harblz,

The absolute worst bit of the John Key video is when he is listening to the lady talking about her concerns with affordable housing.

He just doesn’t seem to give a shit about what she is talking about and walks off.

    That was telling and disgusting.

  • Hard News: A. B. B.,

    Russell,

I write regarding your dilemma on voting in Western Bays.

Following on from your post about how right-wing candidates in this year's local body election claim credit for things they did not do, well the opposite is true too – they try to blame City Vision for things they put in place.

I noted C&R's attempt to say that the City Vision candidates wanted to ban people from having a drink on Ponsonby Road at 11pm.

    Bollocks.

In fact the proposal for an 11pm outdoor dining curfew came from a review of the liquor by-laws by the previous Banks/C&R Council. It has received no support from City Vision councillors who have continually voted against it. It is absolutely dishonest for Sally Wenley and Greg Moyle to claim otherwise.

Al fresco dining is a part of the Ponsonby lifestyle and I don’t want it threatened by Banks and his merry band of reactionaries.

I can only hope that when people go to vote in this election, they remember just how bad it was under Banks and C&R. I’ll never forgive him for trying to sell off council housing and putting older Aucklanders through the anguish of worrying about their abodes. We will go back to the brashness and bitterness of Bank’s council. They will not protect public assets and we’ll have years of underinvestment in council services again.

Don’t doubt that if C&R gets back in we’ll see higher annual charges, hurting middle and modest income people most. We’ll see underinvestment in our streetscapes and services. And we’ll again move away from making our city a modern and progressive metropolis.

  • Hard News: Done and Blended,

Mr Brown also dropped in references to Battlestar Galatica in his (and his wife's) "I am a Singaporean" meme - which makes him extra cool.

    So say we all.

  • Hard News: You can't moan,

    Ok, that game was fantastic.

The Blackcaps will be unbeatable when the top order fires and the bowlers all line up.

    Bring on the cup.

  • Hard News: You can't moan,

    Back to the original topic...

Whilst I really enjoyed watching the game live and the crowd was simply fantastic and New Zealand's batting was absolutely fantastic - there are a couple of points I would like to make.

Our bowling, expect for Bond, was as you said, pretty crap.

And the Aussie’s are way under strength. They are missing half their first choice line up. Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee and Michael Clarke are all out. This is nowhere near their top side. Admittedly the people out (except Lee) are not strike bowlers. But take the top 5 people out of our team and I wonder what would happen.

Back to our bowling. I was surprised as anyone with the inclusion of Tuffy. I would have had Chris Martin in the team.
