  • Hard News: Rape and unreason, in reply to Russell Brown,

I'm not a big fan of the phrase "trigger warning", because not everyone knows what it means and because it's bound up in a bunch of social signalling I'm not part of. But next time something's about rape, I'll try and make that clear.

I think the thing is with "trigger warning" is that people who are likely to need them are familiar with the term. Anyone who has been on the internet and read some of that stuff gets what it means. If I had my way, we'd put them on news articles. (Online. I don't read the print newspaper.)

I clicked on your tweet expecting some sort of Jonesian "poor people suck" rant, that would make me angry, but not be upsetting. I read the headline, and burst into tears. (Which is another thing for the Herald editorial staff to consider.)

The world doesn't owe me safe spaces, nor do I expect it to. But in the same way that I'd get a warning if a massive bump in the road was coming, it helps if I can prepare myself for those things.

And no. Retweeting is not the only activism people can do. I'd suggest they can submit to this, for a start.

  • Hard News: Rape and unreason, in reply to Jackie Clark,

As someone who had to go away and cry at least twice yesterday, I appreciate the loud voices. I use my voice where I can, and I hope I use it as effectively as possible, but I can't always.

That people get angry about this makes me think the perhaps, one day, I won't feel like I'm being ignored when I talk about this stuff.

Also, I don't know about all those other people, but when I said about having to log off twitter because it was all getting a bit much, a bunch of people messaged me. I hope they did other people too.

  • Hard News: Rape and unreason,

If my daughter came home and said she’d been wandering around in a park at night I’d tell her it’s a dumb thing to do and it’s unfortunate that’s the reality of it. If something happened to her, I wouldn’t tell her she asked for it but I would suggest that she regulate her behaviour to align with reality.

Given the vast majority of assaults don't happen in dark parks at all, but at home and work, I assume you'll be finding her a cave and some padlocks so she can properly regulate her behaviour?

I don't have time to go find the research but yes. Because if you can come up with a reason that that woman got raped, then if you don't do that (if you're a good girl), then you won't be.

Because there but for the grace of short skirts/being drunk/being in the wrong place at the wrong time, etc.

    Does this person understand English?

    I couldn't possibly comment.

Someone on Twitter (I saw it retweeted) talked about all the criticism coming from "vested interests".

I sent an all caps email to a friend talk about how, yes, indeed, I do have a vested interest in not being raped. But there were more swears.

Swift is in her early 20s, but sings as an idealised version of a young teenager. I doubt being a teen was like that, even for her.

Yep. The lyrics for Fifteen are...not very nuanced.

I would bet money that Taylor Swift doesn’t think she is flawless in the same way that Lorde implies that she herself is, well, normal.

I wouldn't want to put words in her mouth, but I think the "flawless" thing implies more than just her appearance. Swift has a very carefully crafted "good girl next door" thing going on. And yeah, the lyrics of some of her songs are really not doing much for young women.

I do have a worry that Haim will sound like Shania Twain.

I've basically been listening to Lorde, Haim, and david dallas on repeat for months. I really like Haim, and their story. (Though, yes, Shania adjacent.) And so, here they are, crushing Miley's Wrecking Ball.
