  • Busytown: Front, man,

I would like to nominate Georgina Beyer for GG.
I can think of so many ways that she reflects the many faces and aspects of the people of ANZ.

  • Up Front: The C Word,

It is so frustrating to arrive late to one of Emma's posts and the following discussion. I blame the hot weather we are having in Washington and the G&Ts.

The up-turned collar thing has been around for a very long time, read Georgette Heyer for good descriptions of Regency collars.

Then turn to John Hughes in the 80s. 'Pretty in Pink', or 'The Breakfast Club' for two examples. You'll see so many up-turned collars you'll want to have one yourself. Interestingly it is not the posh kids with up-turned collars.

I always thought up-turned collars went with Ivy League preppy kids bounding off to the yacht or tennis court with their white shirt collars turned up and a pastel sweater artfully tied around their shoulders.

Sloan Rangers seem to go in for the up-turned collar too. Maybe that harks back to Regency days.

Of course in middle aged Parnell/Karori women it might be to hide the wrinkly neck.

  • Radiation: Better than Twilight,

The American Outrageous Fortune, Scoundrels has just started too

They all look very waspy, not an animal print in sight. The Judd character is way to clean looking to be competition for sexy Wolf, and he's called "Sergeant Mack" wtf?

Dr Anna Wirz-Justice was a kiwi girl (Christchurch?) and she went on to study Seasonal Affective Disorder.

  • Cracker: Cup of Tea and a new Electoral System,

Smaller parties holding "the balance of power" is one of those phrases that really gets up my nose.

Smaller parties have no power unless the larger parties give it to them. National can quite comfortably run a minority government with assistance from a range of smaller parties. They could negotiate with the Greens for support on a particular policy, or the Maori Party or ACT, or even Labour.

If National chooses to get its support from ACT rather than another party then that is because ACT is more in line with National's direction.

If Britain has a proportional system and the BNP was represented in Parliament racist policies pushed by the BNP could only get traction if the larger parties supported them.

And while I'm on a roll. NZ First got 4.07% of the party vote in 2008. Don't write Winston Peters off, he has a lot of personal support and would probably have snuck in if he hadn't misread voters impatience with his financial issues. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him back in the running in 2011. The angry middle vote, grumpy with National, not quite ready to go back to Labour and Maori fed up with the Maori Party.

  • Up Front: Boobs!,

Magnitude 6.9 quake south of Taiwan

I'm impressed at the speed men are corrupted by women. Seeing as it is only just April 26th in many participating parts of the world and not only will most temptresses be sound asleep, the poor men wont even have had much of a chance to be tempted.

Either that or kiwi women really are amazing temptresses and kiwi blokes the most APBs in the world.

Thinking scientifically - are earthquakes more likely to occur near to the source of corruption, or can an energetic temptress cause an earthquake on the other side of the world?

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

    all the regenerations:

After the Hartnell/Troughton regeneration they were pretty crap. Except the Goon Show moment in the Troughton/Pertwee regen. wooahooa

I haven't seen the latest regen so I was strong and stopped the vid so as not to spoil my fun. Going to watch the last Tennant episodes in Wellington if AroVideo gets the DVD to my parent's place in time for my visit later this week. Oh the thrill of expectation.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

I came in just as Tom Baker was replacing Jon Pertwee. I might have seen a few episodes with Pertwee but Baker was the Doctor in our house. Got a bit bored with him and his blond dress-alike companion by the end of his era. Peter Davison was a good replacement, and he still makes great TV.

Using wikipedia to refresh my memory - I think the waning of my interest has more to do with my age and me moving out of home and getting involved with the harsh reality of university and mind altering substances than the decline of the series. I do recall thinking that McCoy was a BIG mistake, but that Ace was a cool companion.

I really liked Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. He was dark and edgy, and there was none of that irritating kissy stuff with the awful Rose. 'The Empty Child' is one of my all time favourite episodes. (Not entirely to do with Capt. Jack!)

  • Up Front: Who's Dreaming Now?,

I've put my fingers in my ears (temporarily removed to type this) and am singing (flatly) lalalalala

Wave wildly when this government is given the boot and I'll start using all my senses again.

I'm tempted to keep my eyes shut too but I'll stick to reading only Agatha Christie and Georgette Heyer in the interim.

  • OnPoint: Dear Gerry,

You can only recycle vegetarians in those ones

You should make sandwiches out of the good bit of those vegetarians first. You know, like those "vegetarian" sandwiches you see in cafes. You'll find them next to the "chicken" or "beef" sandwiches.
