  • Cracker: Spotted, in reply to BenWilson,

I'm often interested to hear, more because it tells me about the person than about the art. But yes, people saying things you like are crap wears thin fast. It seems more likely, the more refined the tastes of the person.

I once gave a talk at the Film Archive entitled 'Why science fiction is the only valid art form of the 20th and 21st centuries'. Very well attended. Excellent discussion afterwards.

Though maybe I just think that cos I was drunk.

Well, yeah. Really only matters to those making the shit. And a few others. Very few others.

Nothing wrong with that. Wouldn't have it any other way.

and why should I care whether something 'is' art anyway?

No reason. But if you do defining what art is is the necessary first step towards defining the criteria for 'good' art.

  • Cracker: Spotted, in reply to BenWilson,

That's a self-referential definition. Unless you point to the other art works, I can't use it to identify any art works.

Yes it is. Luckily, there are 50,000 years' worth of art works to point to, in a wonderful variety of forms.

I reckon it has to be self-referential to include references to other works within the work as well as presentation in gallery contexts etc.

Requirements for a definition of art:

It has to include all art and exclude all non-art.

This means questions of taste are irrelevant, as are questions of whether something is good art or not.

All we want is the answer to the question: 'What is art?'
