serves me right for not doing research I guess! I would like to see the salary cap lifted a bit higher though to prevent the loss of players to other sports, without bankrupting the clubs either.
I just hate it that a sport I love constantly goes through turmoil. Like cricket, the other sport I happen to love.....

The salary cap is a great idea......and there has definitely been a clear breech here. It's certainly one of the closest competitions in the world because of it.
But playing devil's advocate here - there is a wider concern with the control of news ltd and it's involvement with the nrl in general. The salary cap could actually be construed as a restraint of trade agreement - they're preventing players from making money outside of playing a game of rugby league - e.g. sponsorship, endorsements etc.
Not too many professional competitions have these restraints, and there is the ever present threat of rugby (in my personal opinion a more boring game by far) to lure players away.
I believe (could be wrong) the clubs are limited to income from News Ltd etc who feeds it through the NRL. Perhaps the salary cap could be lifted to 6 million or slightly higher and a greater share of tv revenue distributed amongst the clubs?
It's a fantastic competition in a sport where, particularly in nz it's constantly shooting itself in the foot.

Anyway, people refusing to pay poll tax in the UK, and smashing the place up a bit in March 1990 led to the tax being abolished and its perpetrator forced into demented retirement.
True. It did however 6 months later lead to a very thinly disguised poll tax called council tax which exists to this very day and people are still paying it on a regular basis. And it's perpetrator was replaced by a potato like figurehead, the resulting image change ensured the same party stayed in power - with the said tax in place.

As someone who's been to quite a few of these "reunions" I've found it a mixed bag, but definitely more good than poor. Some I'm not sure you can even class as reunions - did they even split up in the first place? And how do you classify a solo singer coming back - certainly not a reunion!
Gang of Four I've seen 3 times in the last two years - two shows superb, one a bit flat, but overall excellent. Killing Joke - one good show and two VERY mediocre shows which were in danger of tainting the enjoyment of their great albums. Dinosaur Jr - fantastic. Throbbing Gristle - really enjoyed it, as with Psychic TV. Devo - fantastic. Jesus Lizard - incredible. Pixies - great, but maybe not again. There's heaps of others but I have to say I feel privileged I've been able to see the majority of them - with the exception of Bad Brains, who unfortunately were dreadful, solely due to HR's flakiness and some bad sound.
Grace Jones was simply astonishing. Sonic Youth - not a candidate but great as always, still going obviously - the other side of that coin is the Fall, who are also still going but do terrible shows quite often due to MES being incoherent most of the time.
A common feature of a lot of the older punk bands is that they've got a rejuvenated rhythm section to add spice - the bass player and drummer are generally younger hired hands or new additions.
It's worth mentioning I saw Bad Lieutenant last night - basically New Order minus Hooky and they were amazing too - they played Out of Control, Temptation, Ceremony, Crystal, Regret, Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart. It seriously brought a tear to the eye.
While there is a risk it might devalue the original experiences from your past I would never turn down a chance to hear that list...ever.

I think my still buying cds is a folorn loyalty to buying the album as a piece of "art" as opposed to songs with no context (yes, yes, probably foolish I know)........and I'm not at all convinced about the quality of mp3s and their transience.....give me 5 years or so and I'll probably come over......

yep, sit down gigs are far superior for me these days, especially having spent some recent ones stuck in sweaty middle aged men's armpits while they try and relive their punk days by throwing lots of beer in the air and attempting to mosh. I know some people like that, and a few years back I would have been more than happy, but not now.....
And yes, guilty of still buying cds......I've made significant investments over the years in both the cd and vinyl format, and I can't see myself switching to mp3s any time soon.....which is a shame 'cos it's quite hard to get either these days so online is the retail option really.
