  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

I'd be very surprised if other clubs are not finding creative ways around the salary cap (much in the same way All Blacks in the Haden-era used to find ways around the shamateurism constraints), but I guess the sheer scale of this one is the shock.

While the idea of ensuring an even playing field is a good one, the salary cap has plenty of flaws, not least the effective penalising of teams for developing their own talent - my understanding is that the cap accommodates market-value of a player, so if a team signs an unknown 15 year old (e.g. Israel Folou), develops them over 6-7 years into a test player, then they have to accomodate their market value under the cap (or lose them to another club). Surely clubs should get consideration under the cap for home-grown players?

  • Hard News: Good Newsing,

I even love the average ones

Hah - know what you mean. On a trainspotting note, the FB Peel sessions with Teenage Fanclub are well worth tracking down :)

  • Hard News: That Summer!,

Is this a bit like Cosmo the fearless cat?

(sorry - haven't figured out how to embed, but well worth a look)

I've totally loved summer, but I'm also glad I live somewhere now with four definite seasons. Otherwise when would I get to wear my winter jackets?

  • Random Play: The Big Day Out: Lambs to…,

Just saw Chris. They're looking to play 20 minutes, and have been rehearsing a lot . Cool.

And yes, they were very cool indeed, Chris Knox looking like all fired up in his Graham Bonnet sunnies and seemingly enjoying the hell out of himself, and Shayne Carter sporting a pretty wide grin too.

Thought Laneways a great addition to the music festival circuit - albeit with minor issues in terms of the bar queues, sound quality (unless standing directly in front of the stage) and the lack of food choice. Good mix of bands (Black Lips a particular favourite) and easy to move around the venue. Hope it comes back next year.

  • Field Theory: The Sad News Springboks,

On that 1995 final, I was sad to read today that one of the Springbok players (Ruben Krueger) from that 'game-that-shall-never-be-watched-again' passed away at the age of 39 from cancer.

I still look like the aftermath of a Barbie haircut

Sorry, having two daughters who wield a mean pair of scissors, this description made me snort my coffee. Glad to hear the recuperation gathers pace.

  • Field Theory: Blue Sky Thinking,

Roy & HG used to do awesome alternative radio commentaries for State of Origin and Grand Final games.

It was very common for people to watch the Channel 9 live-feed with the sound down, and the radio commentary from Roy & HG up loud.

I'd definitely do the same for watching the All Blacks on Sky and hearing Jed's commentary if someone could make it happen.

  • Field Theory: I'm ever so pissed.,

Meanwhile, the Oracle of Rattue has spoken, and told us that Australia will "not win the World Cup."

I think I might just pop down the TAB and slip a quiet bet on the Wallabies.
