  • Hard News: The next four years,

Putin’s belief that the Ukraine is part of Russia hasn’t got anything to do with the US.

Obama attempted to reach out to Putin – an 8 year window of opportunity Putin responded to with military aggression.

Russia as victim is how Putin likes to portray things. His campaign against Hillary Clinton is probably in part payback for Bill Clinton’s actions against Russian-backed Serbian fascists back in the 90s.

  • Hard News: The next four years,

Key was able to have a constructive relation with Obama on trade and defence. Clark could even work with someone like Bush.

Trump is completely unknown territory. Unknown but probably predictable.

If Valls becomes the next french president it might pay for us to shift focus given France's pacific commitments.

Meanwhile, in the US the knives are still out for Clinton because the Dems created Trump or something:

I find this so disturbing. Putin funds media aimed at the US public that makes crazy allegations of Obama funding Al Qaida. And it’s working.

The smearing of Obama and Clinton along with the minimising of the brutality of Assad and Putin must be one of the most effect propaganda campaigns in recent years.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

Greenwald has gone all anti-anti-fake news.

There's this really weird phenomenon of people denying at great cost to their integrity that there were any factors that decreased the chances of. a Dem victory (other than of course Clinton and the Elites being corrupt liars etc etc,).

And with such vehemence and dishonesty.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

I wonder about the psychology of the need to dress up attacks on Clinton and other Dems as some sort of heroic journalistic balance.

The ploy is to present selective, out of context information then claim it proves Clinton is a lying, warmongering, Bernie hating neoliberal. Then turn around and claim not to be campaigning against her but oh by the way she's very unpopular don't you know.

    It's an interesting charade.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

It's not just the obviously fake news which is an issue.

The Podesta emails weren't exactly fake but the way they were presented was dishonest.

They were released to undermine Clinton and sow animosity amongst Sanders supporters. But because they weren't fake that allowed Wikileaks and their apologists like Greenwald to disingenuously claim this was journalism.

This hacking business isn't really leading to greater transparency, it's lead to Trunp.

Well it’s not altogether surprising that when we cut the population in half and divisively socialise each half in different ways – primarily according to their genitals – that some people then perpetuate and aggravate this division.

Trump as victim. He had no choice but to boast about groping women since Hillary is divisive.

I'm more and more inclined to think that it's misogyny that is playing a very large part in what's going wrong at the moment.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

I don't know what to think about why so many people believe things that are untrue. Cretainly what the untruth actually is they believe in is of crucial mportance to their perceived self-protection of what they fear. But that's nothing new.

What seems to be new is this relatively small percentage of the population is now - via the internet - capable of forming extened communities and having an effect far beyond their actual numbers.

We need to talk about the online radicalisation of young, white men

It is to do with race as well as gender but I think there's something more significant going on with gender. Afterall it is mostly males.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Short answer is, Americans, particularly those democrats who chose not to vote, were making the choice to not elect a woman.

I think it was a perfect storm. The rise of white nationalism, the economic downturn, the overt misogyny from Trump and many others who should know better. In conjunction with the growing influence of a well funded and dishonest alternative media, Putin and Wikileaks. Plus the unfortunate timing of the FBI letters which was the final nail in the coffin.
