  • Hard News: Geekstuff,

I heard that Vista likes 4GB of ram to be useful. Its looking like more reasons to get a Mac after all. I went and got a Gravatar to try out - looks like it is all working now.

  • Hard News: An okay sort of day,

Re: Foo camp - Speaking as a local (and also a newish Wikipedia editor-coincidentally) my view is that the event will have much wider implications for NZ as does any large "salon" of ideas.

I hope it stays and have added my comments to the discussion.

There does seem to be a catch 22 of sorts about OC (original content?) in that it can only be added after external sources provide the narration. Possibly this is for verification purposes but in any case it deserves to be highlighted.

  • Hard News: I hope she does something interesting,

It is very nice of you to be thinking of Theresa s business future so generously. I'd suggest that being an entrepreneur in a small business is a world away from being a manager in a very large organisation like a telco or a bank where she came from.

On the positive side though she does come from marketing sector and so perhaps she will surprise us all.

The wider angle is that the impending changes to Telecom structure are good for NZ business generally even if this was an "unintended consequence".

The close off date for responses to the discussion paper is - 5pm, Wednesday 20 December 2006.

Is it also worth noting the feedback prefences or is this too prescriptive? (35 & 36) may help to provide some shape for the policy group who will be assessing various contributions.

Note this form is a guide to the format of your response. you are welcome to use additional pages.

    Input to the Next Stage
The strategy identifies three main elements to the strategy – building the digital foundations, unlocking
content, and leveraging opportunities. What things are important to you and your community or area
interest under each of these elements? Are there unique issues or opportunities that affect you or the sector
you work in? Are there ideas or information you need assistance with or want to share with others?

  • Island Life: Supply-sider moves into deficit,

I'm glad you had that link to the CNN story. Some of my friends thought your poem was a cheap shot - and they didn't like it.

Just in case people missed it http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/16/news/newsmakers/friedman/index.htm?cnn=yes

"Overseas, Friedman's work helped shape policies used in Chile in the 1970s. His influence raised eyebrows among critics because of the repressive political situation in the country in that period." which points out the links with Pinochet, Thatcher & Regan.

I do think that the other linkage was between conservatism and monetarism.

I also think Friedman was a great man as economics is not an easy area at all and humour is one of the ways that prople deal with all of the conflicting feelings around both the unintended consequences of such theories and the positives as well.

Even Friedman noted that there had been mistakes.

"In 2003, Milton Friedman renounced many of the policies from the 1980s that were based on quantity targets. In doing so he basically conceded that the demand for money is not so easily predicted. He stood, however, by his central formulations." (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monetarism)

I also think Friedman was a monetarist - which is different from supply side / so that is a a mistake but links to Regan, Thatcher and Pinochet are all there.

And I think that it still a tribute / which recognises the bitter sweet nature of real world politics.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

I heard an ex Mayor (Les Mills on radio) say (to the effect) that when the Port company starts supporting the waterfront he would take it more seriously.

I may have missed some of the debate - but I don't think the single most affected parties - being the Port - are supporting the proposal at all. That should be a sobering thought.

Cortesy of Air NZ I have checked the return flights to Toyko (Narita) as being $2025.01 which means for $100m - approximately 49,382.47 people could get their return airfares paid for if the game was held in Tokyo. ( An earlier suggestion was to run the cup in Japan)

Lets also consider changing Eden Park charter and holding netball games there - anything as long as it doesn't stay exclusively rugby - as the price for pissing off so many maths teachers.

Or even better why not call the bluff and have 12,000 people watch the game live in the Vector arena statium and the rest of the people can go to Eden Park .

Quite simple really - Eden Park and the "almost" waterfront - so what is the big deal.

I used to have Dick's mobile number but deleted it. He splashed it around when he got elected saying he was willing to hear from the people.

I suggest anyone who might have that number still use it.
