  • Hard News: The Politics of Absence, in reply to Russell Brown,

people like Labour policies and the general philosophy they embody

I have some difficulty in working out what that general philosophy is. The Labour electioneering pamphlet that arrived in our letterbox was a picture of a $100 note with the message Labour's policies will put more money in your pocket. WTF? Pretty much exactly the same words were used to sell tax cuts last time around. It was also rather depressing that one of the flagship policies to support this was the piddling one of saving a family $5 a week by cutting GST on fresh fruit and veg.

  • Field Theory: Rugby World Cup stories,

You could check out the fanzone on the waterfront, Ross, we watched the France/Tonga game from there and it was great. Nice crowd, far superior food to the stadium, and the Ukulele Orchestra to entertain us.

  • Field Theory: Rugby World Cup stories,

Well, it's a bit late but I;'m going to throw my story in anyway. In 2007 my lad was eight and had a teacher who was right into entering every competition going. Air NZ ran a competition for making the best support video for the ABs, and my lad's class won it! (they re-wrote Bad Moon Rising for the occasion). The prize was a visit to the school by the All Blacks and the provision of a a barbeque for the entire school community. Wow, we all thought. We pictured marquees and unlimited bubbly and liveried waitpersons and so on. And then .. that game with France, of which it is still too soon to speak. The ABs still had to honour their commitment to the school, of course, but it was a fairly subdued occasion with four of the wellington-based ABs turning up in a taxi, and a mobile hot dog stand! They still had to front up to talk to the kids in class though.

As long as your online presence is consistent, coherent, and accountable – who cares whether the label is your legal name, your porn star name, or a keysmash?

Well, maybe, but being accountable as a pseudonym is not the same thing as being accountable IRL.
But I shoud add that I totally accept the point that people have valid reasons for doing so.

I have recently spent far, far too much time thinking about developing a metal opera

    I give you Aeterno Elementum.

Try murmuring Je suis allumé to the next Frenchman/woman you meet, and see what happens

  • Up Front: It's Not Sex, and It's Not Education, in reply to Paul Campbell,

Yes, my lad used to have various inappropriate party pieces of that ilk - Tom Lehrer's Oedipus Rex comes to mind:

There once lived a man called Oedipus Rex
You may have heard about his odd complex
His name appears in Freud's index
'Cos he loved his mother ..

Aussie folk singer Judy Small wrote a song about the IPD. I'll see if I can dig out a link. It's a beauty.
And here it is - lyrics only, haven't found a live version yet.

  • Busytown: Sons for the Return Home,

Threadswerve - is anyone else mildly distressed at the Labour election pamphlet that arrived today in the post?
Picture of $100 note - message that Labour policies will put more money in your pocket.
Since when did Labour stand for naked self interest? In the last election, I seem to remember that National's schtick was that tax cuts would put more money in your pocket.
I have voted Labour all my life but I really am on the verge of voting Green this time round, as I think they have done a far better job of articulating their values. Their 'For a richer New Zealand' campaign is brilliant.
