You appear to imply that there is a better, albeit non-nuanced, analysis of the interview. Link⸮

    You haunt me Graeme.

There was a thunderous chorus of “case closed” from his supporters on Twitter, as if the interview had in one stroke erased any and all objections from the Law Society and others. It clearly didn’t, but people seemed prepared to believe that.

But that's the dichotomy of political debate isn't it? All Key did was further entrench people's pre-existing opinions. It's why in many ways political debate is a sham. We identify on some tribal ideological level and come hell or high water that's our position. I'm no different, I could never vote for him (but then my parents were both teachers so I don't have the choice).

I'm always amused in these instances at how people react differently to the same stimuli. To many, John Key got DESTROYED by John Campbell. And all he did was confirm the opinion of most that he's a smug asshole (Hello bomber). To others, Key destroyed Campbell, confirming once and for all that he's the greatest Prime Minister we've ever had.

This is the best nuanced analysis of the interview I've seen so far. Ka pai.

That letter is an exercise in spectacular PR. Anyone considering buying a company needs to take that down word-for-word and replicate it as best they can...

  • Field Theory: In Judgement,

I've always been puzzled how lil ol' NZ was able to co-opt the best sporting colours in the world. How on Earth did we end up with black? And at the same time, how did Australia end up with the worst?

These are the things that plague me.

  • Hard News: The Real Threat,

I find this all horrifyingly fascinating. After 9/11 we were all prepared to give up some privacy for the feeling of safety, but now it seems we've had enough. It started piecemeal with the airport scanners, but that's given way to this utter shitstorm about our own online privacy. And now we're getting super defensive of our journalists - which I think is great.

For so long, journalists have been scorned by the public but now we want them protected and looked after. Fascinating stuff. Also, because you host this blog, and we all comment on it, do you think we're in the tree too? Because that tree is going to be getting Tane Mahuta sized pretty quickly...

  • Hard News: A different kind of country,

Wow. This is a call to arms if ever I saw one. Nice piece Russell.

Edit: just so we're clear, I don't mean a literal call to arm oneself and start a militia.

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?,

When my (now) wife and I got engaged, we talked about the surname thing. For some family reasons she was keen to shed hers but also we just felt it was cool to be a collective unit so there'd be one name. Given the obvious awesomeness of my surname (inator) we took that.

Actually I offered to take her name and said I'd be perfectly happy with that, but she wasn't keen.

  • OnPoint: Government Portfolios for Dummies,

Back in my day, we used to print the response, then go over the redacted bits in black vivid, then photocopy that with the toner colour all the way to DARK then scan that.

    Used to work pretty well.

If people are sending out secrets with twink then they deserve to be revealed.

    knobjobbers

I enjoy this immensely. Except I once was one of these knobjobbers at a certain Government Dept. We actually moved to OCR PDFs for official correspondence. It was a big day. Lots of high fiving by us young tech savvy folk.
